. I Minn.
Application brats-i. 1933, "Serial N6. 692,574 T 4 Claims; (c1; zooemi The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved sprayer of the hand-manipulated continuous type. which may be 'freelyswung about asis desirable in manipulation for the spraying. of plants and the like with,- out clogging or interfering with its efilciencyor vaiyingthe character of the spray delivered.
Second, to provide a sprayer of this type which is very simple and economical in structure and at the same time effective for the purpose.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appearfrom the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a sprayer embodying the features of my invention partially in central vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a section through the liquid tank or receptacle on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section of the nozzle on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of the nozzle on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line 55 of Fig. 1 showing details of mounting of the liquid tube.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises an air pump, the cylinder I I of which is adapted as a hand piece, the plunger 2 being provided with a plunger rod 3 terminating in the hand piece 4.
At the front end of the cylinder is a forwardly tapered air pressure chamber 5, the head 6 of the pump constituting a partition between the cylinder and the air chamber, the pump having a return check discharge valve 1.
The fluid receptacle 8 is preferably cylindrical and arranged transversely below the air pressure chamber and fixedly secured thereto, a portion of the bottom wall of the pressure chamber'being cut out to receive a segment of the wall of the receptacle. The parts are soldered together and further secured by means of the brace 9. The receptacle communicates with the pressure chamber 5 through an opening ID in the top of the receptacle.
The pressure chamber is provided with a threaded nozzle II on which the sprayer tip I2 is mounted for adjustment. The liquid or educti-on tube I3 is disposed centrally of the nozzle which is crimped inwardly or provided with inwardly projecting portions 14 supporting the end of theliquid tube centrally relative to the nozzle and inproper relation tothe spray tip, the adjustment of the tip towards and from the end'of the eduction-tube thereby varying the relative amount of air and liquid andvarying thechar: acter of the spray.
The eduction tube is supported by a spider l5 within the pressure chamber and is disposed through the opening II! in the receptacle to depend into the receptacle to a point adjacent the bottom thereof.
Baifle or deflector plates it are disposed longitudinally of the receptacle and secured to the top thereof on opposite sides of the opening l0. These bafiie plates are of substantial width so that they depend into the receptacle a substantial distance and prevent the liquid in the receptacle splashing through the opening into the pressure chamber which results in the liquid being discharged through the air nozzle and destroying the character of the spray and resulting in spitting or sometimes the discharge of a solid or substantially solid stream.
With the parts thus arranged, the sprayer may be handled or swung about quite roughly or vigorously which is desirable in use without the objectionable result of spitting or varying the character of the spray.
I have illustrated my improvements as I have embodied the same in a type of hand sprayer quite largely used for the spraying of plants or animals. I have not attempted to illustrate certain embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention,- what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is:
1. In a hand sprayer, the combination of an air pump cylinder provided at its front end with an air pressure chamber and having a check valve delivery connection thereto, a cylindrical receptacle mounted transversely on the underside of said air pressure chamber and communicating therewith through an opening in the top of the receptacle, a spray nozzle discharge for said pressure chamber, a liquid tube operatively associated with said nozzle and depending into said receptacle through said opening in the top thereof, and substantially radial bafile plates disposed longitudinally of said receptacle and secured to. the top of the receptacle on opposite sides of the said opening therein and depending into said receptacle a substantial distance.
2. In a hand sprayer, the combination of an air pump cylinder provided at its front end with an air pressure chamber and having a check valve delivery connection thereto, a cylindrical receptacle mounted transversely on the underside of said air pressure chamber and communicating therewith through a central opening in the top of the receptacle, a spray nozzle discharge for said pressure chamber, a liquid tube operatively associated with said nozzle and depending into said receptacle, and downwardly and inwardly inclined longitudinal baflie members at the top of the receptacle guarding the said opening therein, said opening and bafiie members being disposed longitudinally with respect to said receptacle.
3. In a hand sprayer, the combination with an air pump adapted to be operated by hand, of an air pressure chamber carried by said pump and to which said pump delivers, a tubular receptacle mounted transversely on the underside of said air pressure chamber and communicating therewith through a central opening at the top of the receptacle, a spray nozzle discharge for said pressure chamber, a liquid tube mounted in said pressure chamber and operatively associated with said nozzle and depending into said receptacle through said opening in the top thereof, and an inclined downwardly and inwardly projecting longitudinal baffle for said opening secured at the top of the receptacle and depending into said receptacle a substantial distance, said opening and bafiie members being disposed longitudinally with respect to said receptacle.
4. In a hand sprayer, the combination with an air pump adapted to be operated by hand, of an air pressure chamber carried by said pump and to which said pump delivers, a tubular receptacle mounted transversely on the underside of said air pressure chamber and communicating therewith through a central opening at the top of the receptacle, a spray nozzle discharge for said pressure chamber, a liquid tube operatively associated with said nozzle and depending into said receptacle through said opening in the top thereof, and a projecting longitudinal baflie for said opening secured at the top of the receptacle and depending into said receptacle a substantial distance, said opening and baiiie members being disposed longitudinally with respect to said receptacle.
