EDWIN E. THOMAS, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN KIEBNAN,-OF
PORTLAND, OREGON.
HAND FIRE EXTINGUISI-IER.
My invention relates to a hand fire extinguisher.
The object of my invention is;to provide an efficient hand fire. extinguisher of simple and inexpensive construction consisting of Furthermore to provide a fire extinguisher having a container of large interior capacity for the chemical fluid, at the same time, keeping the exterior dimensions of the container to the standard sizeof hand fire ex-' tinguishers; r
Furthermore, to provide in an extinguisher of this type a pressure pipe opening at one end into a bore on the outlet side of the controlling valve and extending longitudinally of the pump cylinder and downwardly to and through the head, the pressure pipe'being extended substantially in contact with the pump cylinder throughout its full length above the head, so that the pipe may be protected by the cylinder against bending or distortion in the handling of the cylinder.
I attain my object in a hand fire extinguisher comprising an elongated liquid container provided with a removable head at one end of the container and an air pump mounted on and transversely of said head.
An air charging tube is arranged lengthwise of the exterior of the air pump, the intake end of said air charging tube extending into and being fixed to the air expelling end of the air pump and at its opposite end entering through and being fixed in said container head. A valve is between the intake end of said air charging tube and the air expelling orifice of said air pump, The outer end of said valve chamber is provided with a removable head to permit access to the said chamber, and a ball is in said valve chamber controlling the latter expelling orifice. A liquid expelling tube is also arranged lengthwise of the exterior of the air pump, having a perpendicular end extending into the bottom of said container and its opposite end terminating in a nozzle, located at the expelling end of said pump.
Preferably said perpendicular portion of will at all times be immersed in thelowerr most portion of the liquid in the container, and furthermore preferably a cap is.removably mounted over said expelling, orifice.
The detailsof construction of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter fully described: V
In the drawings: lv Fig. :1 is ;a plan viewvof my invention showing one end of the air pumpcylinder cut away :at its valve controlled expelling end to show the operation of said valve.
F g. 2 is a sectional side view of my invention illustratin also that-that end of the liquid expelling tu e immersed in the liquid container-has a flexible section-thereby to.
hold by gravity the intake end of this tube Y portion of the liquid in the pump'illustrating the arrangement of the air charging andliquid expelling tubes.
=My invention comprises a liquid container a and a removable cap I) upon which is mounted at its middle, in a position at right angles to the said container, a pump. A cylln'der c of the pump contains a piston 01 and a piston rod 6, and is actuated by the handle 7". In the bushing at the handle end of the cylinder through which the piston rod 6 moves, is a vent g, which provides a means for the air to be drawn into the cylinder.
At the opposite end of the pump cylinder 0 is an elongated valve chamber 11, provided with a removable head it to permit access to the said chamber, and a ball 7' in said cham ber to prevent the reverse passage of the air. An orifice 7c in the side of the valve chamber z from which an air charging tube Z extends, lengthwise to and outside the pnmp cylinder and into the end of the contamer an adjacent to the pump cylinder.
A liquid expelling tube on is arranged lengthwise to and on the exterior of said pump cylinder on the opposite side to the air charging tube, and extending into the bottom of the container as at n. This tube includes a flexible section 0. At the expelling orifice 79 is a removable cap 9, that is fastened to the tube m by a guard chain 2".
As the piston (Z travels inward, the air is forced through the valve chamber 11 and into the air charging tube Z, and into the container where a pressure is created; The ball j prevents the reverse passage of the air, andithe liquid is forced through the liquid expelling tube m and expelled through the orifice p. The cap g. is to prevent the said orifice from becoming clogged when the extinguisher is not in use.
The flexible section 0 1n the tube nis pro-,
vided so thatthe end will'accommodate it self to any position and be immersed in the liquid: n v
My invention will have only one valve and few parts, its simplicity of construction reduces the possibility of its failing to tunetionat 'a critical time. The pressure will force the protective cap off and there are no valves or pet-cocks which an excited,-a'mateur fireman might forget to open. a This fire extinguisher is always ready for use and action, it only need be chargedwith a suitable chemical.
v I claim: i
1. In a liquid fire extinguisher, the. com-r bination of liquid-container having an open upper end, a removable head for closing said open end, a pump cylinder secured to said headand arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the container, said cylinder projecting at one end beyond said head, amember having a bore fitting in said end of the cylinder and forming a closure therefor, an outwardly opening valve arranged at the inner end of said bore for controlling communication between the extending longitudinally of said pump cylinder and being projected downwardly to and through the head, said pressure pipe extending substantially. in contact, with the pump cylinder throughout its full length above the head, whereby said pipe is protected by the, cylinder against bending or Y distortion in the handling of" the extinguisher.
2.,A hand fire extinguisher comprising a liquid container, a removable head for closing said container, a pump cylinder carried bythe'head and arranged at right angles to the axis of said container, said cylinder projecting at its discharge end beyond said head,a plug member closing said discharge end ofthe pump cylinder and having a passage therethrough, an outwardly opening valve in said passage, a head removably engaging the plug to close the outer end of the passage, a delivery pipe communicating with the passage on the outlet side of the valve and extending longitudinally of and in close proximity to the cylinder and open: ing through the head of the container, and a liquid delivery tube having anopen end arranged withinthe container and extending through .the container head, said tube beyond the container head being extended longitudinally of and in closeproximity to the cylinder with the discharge end adjacent the valved end of the cylinder.
