This invention relates to fire-extinguishing apparatus, and particularly to apparatus of this character which is operated by a liquid ump.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide a fire-extinguishing apparatus which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and which at the same time is reliable and effective in operation.
Another object of this invent-ion is to provide in a. lire-extinguishing apparatus of the type which is operated by a liquid pump a novel construction of vent and by-pass adapted to prevent leakage from the apparatus.
Other objects and advantages of this invention Will be apparent from the accomypanying drawing and the description set out below.
In the drawing the single figure is a central sectional elevation through a fire extinguisher constructed in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing it Will be seen that the tire extinguisher comprises a container 10 having top and bottom closures 12 and -13. These parts should be composed of materials which are non-corrosive in the presence of the chemicals used, and the tubular member 11 is preferably a seamless brass tubing, and the closure members 12 and 13 brass castings. 'l` he closure members are fastened in an air-tight construction to the tubular member` in any suitable manner, such as by soldering.
The cover member 12 carries all the working parts of the fire extinguisher.y comprising generally, as sh own. a pump mechanism. The pump mechanism has a pump cylinder 16 of suitable non-corrosive material such as brass tubing which extends Within the container and terminates adjacent the lower part of the container. A. piston 18 operates within the cylinder, and is connected to a suitable operating handle 2O by means ot a hollow piston rod 2l. Screw-threaded in the lowerend of the cvlinder 1G is a plug 23 having a passage 24 thcretlnuulgh controlled by a ball valve 25. A screen 27 of suitable ma terial is positioned over the opening in the plug 23 and is held in place by a projecting lip 28 of the plug, which may be conveniently formed by counterboring the plug and bending over the lip portion. The upper end of the plug 23 is provided with a valve seat 29, around the upper end of the passage 24, adapted to cooperate with the ball valve 25 to close the passage through the plug in certain conditions of operation to be later described.
The pump piston 18, which has an axial passage 30 therethrough, carries a packing member 31. This packing member which may be composed of lead is adapted to provide a liquid-tight contact between the piston and the cylinder, and is suitably constructed of soft metal such as lead to provide for little Wearing of the cylinder. The piston 18 is provided with a valve seat 32 around the upper end of the passage 30, with which a second ball valve 33 cooperates. Above the ball valve 33 the piston member has a. lower group of openings 34 and an upper group of openings 35, providing means for the passage of liquid to the exterior of the piston rod and piston. The upper end of the piston member is internally screw-threaded as indicated at'36 to receive the piston rod 21. Suitable lingers 37 extend from the piston member to retain the ball valve 33 in operating` position, these fingers being preferably' inturned as shown. The parts of the pump are of course composed of metals which are resistant to the action of the chemicals used. Satisfactory results have been obtained by using Monel metal for the piston member 18, plug 23, ball valves 25 and 32, and screen 27, and by constructing the pump cylinder 16 and piston rod 21 of brass, tinned inside and outside.
Fastened, as by soldering, to the upper end of the pump cylinder 16 is an outlet casing 40. This outlet casing is provided at its inner end with a flange 41 adapted to seat on vthe cover member 12, and a gasket 42 and suitable screws 43 are provided to attach the same in a gas-tight manner to the cover member. self-contained operating mechanism I unit is thus provided, which may be removed Voutlet connection 45 is tapped into the chamber 44 a suitable distance below the top of this chamber in 4order to provide an air bell or compression chamber which functions v to give uniformity to the discharge of the stream of liquid.
Above the chamber 44 the outlet casing is provided with an internal flange 50 upon which a suitable packing gland 51 seats.
' Suitable packing 52 is carried by the packing gland to form as nearly as possible a liquidtight-packing for the piston rod. A screwthreaded cap 53 cooperates with the upper end of thevoutlet casing to hold the parts in assembled relation.
In fire extinguishers of this type provided with liquid pumps, it is found that some liquid may be carried by the piston rod past the packing gland; which is objectionable. This invention provides means for returning all such leakage of the pump mechanism to the container. In order to accomplish this a suitable by-pass is provided extending from the space about the piston rod above the packing gland to the interior of the container. This by-pass is also utilized as a vent for the container, thus aiding in the return of any leakage. The packing gland 51 is provided at its upper end with a circular flange or extension 59 spaced from the pump rod and also from the Walleof the outlet casing 40 thus providing an annular passage 60 about the piston rod, and an annular passage 61 between the flange 59 and the outlet casing 40. The passage I 60 communicates through an opening'62 in the screw cap 53 with the atmosphere. The cap is suitably beveled so that when the piston is in its innermost position and the inner part 63 of the handle 20 is seated upon the cap 53, the passage 60 still communicates freely with the atmosphere. Above the packing gland the extension59 is provided with a plurality of openings 64, thus providing communication between the passage 60 and a' chamber 61. A by-pass passage is provided which leads from the chamber 61 to the interior of the container. This by-pass is conveniently provided in the form illustrated bycoring the outlet casing 4.0

A suitable handle 75, which ton the ball valve 33 remains seated while the ball valve 25 is raised from its seat and liquid passes into the space between the plug 23 and the piston 18. On the down-stroke of the piston the ball valve 25 seats, thus trapping the liquid within this space so that the liquid therein will flow through the passage 30 as the pump movesdownwardly, the ball valve 33 being held open. On the succeeding upstroke, the ball valve 33 being closed, the liquid above the piston is forced into th'e chamber 44 and through the outlet 45 to the nozzle, and at the same time a fresh supply of liquid is drawn past the ball valve 25 into the space below the piston. Because of the displacement of the pump parts this pump is of the single-acting double-discharge type -and discharges on both the upand the down stroke. The air space in the chamber 44 above the outlet 45, supplemented by the air space in the pump rod 2l, serves as an air bell. protecting the operation of the liquid pump and producing a continuous stream from the nozzle. As the liquid is removed from Within the container 10 air flows into the container to take its place throughthe passage 62 in the cap 53, the passage 60, openings 64, chamber 61, and then through the by-pass. Any liquid lthat leaks pastthe packing 52 upon reciprocation of the piston rod 21 passes through the openings 64 int-o ithe chamber 61. and from there flows by, gravity through the by-pass back to the container. This gravity flow of the leakage liquid is also aided by the air flowing through this passage into the container.
lVhile the form of apparatus herein described constitutes a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this precise form of apparatus, and that changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention whichis defined in the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed is:
l. In a dispensing device, a liquid container. an outlet casing seating on the upper end of said container on the exterior thereof, means for detachahly fastening said casing thereto in gas tight relation` a liquid pump carried h v said outlet casing having a pump cylinder fastened to said outlet casing and extending \vithin said container, a piston for said cylinder connected to an operating fifi means by a piston rod extending through said outlet. casing, said outlet casing having an outlet chamber formed in the inner end thereof and a shoulder formed on the outer side of said outlet chamber, a packing gland snugly tting about said piston rod and seating on said shoulder within said outlet casing on the outer side ot said outlet chamber, said outlet casing also havinga vent passage formed therein on the exterior of said outlet chamber, said passage communicating at one end with the atmosphere and at the other end with the interior of said container, a screw cap for the outer end of said outlet casing for holding' parts in assembled relation, the external diameter ot the upper end of said piston being smaller than the internal dia'meter of the opening about said shoulder but larger than the external diameter of said piston rod, whereby upon removal of said screw cap the said packing gland may be pushed out. by upward movement of said piston rod and piston.
2. In a dispensing device, a liquid container, a cover for said container having an opening therethrough` an outlet casing removably attached to the exterior of said cover in gastight relation about said opening, a liquid pump cylinder attached adjacent its upper end to said outlet casing and extending through the opening in the cover within said container andy opening adjacent the lower end thereof, a piston for said cylinder having an upper portion of smaller external diameter than the internal diameter of said cylinder bore and a packing member commensurate in size With said cylinder bore, a piston rod connected to said pist-on extending through said outlet casing, said casing having an outlet chamber formed in the inner end thereof and a shoulder formed on the outer side of said outlet chamber, a packing gland seating on said shoulder Within the outer end ot said outlet casing, a screw-cap for the outer end of said outlet casing for holding the. parts in assembled relationfsaid parts forming a liquid trap about said piston rod above the outlet chamber. said outlet casing also having a by-pass chamber formed therein communicating with the interior of the container, means t'or discharging liquid leakage from said liquid trap into said by-pass chamber, means for introducing air into said by-pass chamber to serve as a vent passage for said container and to assist. in returning liquid leakage through said by-pass chamber to the interior of the container, the external diameter ot the upper end of said piston being smaller than the internal diameter oty the opening about said shoulder but larger than the external diameter ot said piston rod, whereby upon removal of said screw; cap the piston rod may be moved upwardly to cause the said upper end of said piston to pass through said opening about said shoulder and thereby push said packing gland from its seat to facilitate removal thereof.
3. In a dispensing device, a liquid container, an outlet casing seating on the top of said container on the exterior thereof, means for detachably fastening said casing thereto in gas' tight relation, a liquid pump carried by said outlet casing having apump cylinder fastened to said outlet casing and extending within saidcontainer, a piston for said cylinder connected to an operating means by a piston rod extending through said outlet casing said casing having an outlet chamber formed in the inner end thereof above said container and fastening means for-said outlet casing, a packing gland for the piston rod carried by the outer end of said casing about said piston rod, a screw cap for the outer end of the outlet casing for holding the parts in assembled relation, said outlet casing also having a vent passage formed therein on the exterior ofthe outlet chamber, said passage communieating at one end with the atmos here and at the other end with the interior o said container, said outlet casing being readily detachable from said container to permit said outlet casing, pump and vent to be removed as a unit from said container.
