Description
" June 28, 1932. c. NELSON 1,865,203
SPRAYER Filed Aug. 14. 1930 gvvuento'o y'cfW Patented June 28, 1932.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FRANKLIN C. NELSON, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, .ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE SPRAYER Application filed August 14, 1930. Serial No. 475,321.
This invention relates to improvements in liquid spraying devices of the type in which liquid is drawn from a source of supply and is atomized by a blast of air, or other gas, which is directed across the delivery opening of a siphon tube. The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which latter Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a spray device embodying the improvements; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the spray device.
Referring particularly to the drawing, ref erence numeral 1 designates a reservoir adapted to contain liquid to be atomized. A gas compressor is secured to the reservoir. The gas compressor comprises a cylinder 2 containing a piston which is adapted to compress air or other gas. The piston comprises a piston rod 3 which is secured to a piston head composed of clamping plates 4: with an intervening washer 5 of leather or other suitable material. The piston is actuated by means of a handle 6. Gas compressed in the cylinder is expelled from the cylinder through a delivery opening 8 in the head 9 of the cylinder. Head 9 is inset a substantial distance from the end of the cylinder leaving an annular flange 1O projecting for- Wardly which surrounds the delivery opening.
Liquid is drawn from the reservoir through a siphon tube 12 into position to be struck and atomized by a blast of gas from the compressor. The siphon tube is secured to the head of the cylinder at 13 and to the flange and extends into the reservoir to a position below the normal level of liquid in the reservoir. The flange and reservoir are provided with cooperating openings 11 adjoining the tube. The cylinder head is provided with an auxiliary opening 1 1 preferably relatively small diameter as compared with delivery opening 8. The auxiliary opening faces the siphon tube between the reservoir and the delivery end of the tube and faces the flange 10 in position to direct gas under pressure against an upper surface of the flange. In
an alternative form of the invention the opening 11 in the flange and reservoir can be omitted and some of the advantages of the invention will be retained.
Under some conditions of operation, a portion of the liquid which is delivered from the suction tube may accumulate upon and flow down the exterior surface of the tube. By the improved construction, any, liquid which may accumulate upon the exterior of the siphon tube is blasted therefrom by the force of the gas delivered through the auxiliary opening in the cylinder head. The liquid which creeps down the siphon tube is therefore removed before it has a chance to creep down the outside of the reservoir and drip from the bottom of the reservoir.
Various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims, in which it is desired to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as the prior art permits.
I claim:
1. In a spray device, a gas compressor having a delivery opening, a reservoir for liquid below the compressor, and a siphon tube extending from the interior of the reservoir upwardly exteriorly of the compressor to a delivery end opposite the opening, the compressor having an auxiliary opening facing the tube between the reservoir and delivery end of the tube.
2. In a spray device, a gas compressor having a delivery opening in its head, a reservoir for liquid below the compressor, a flange projecting forwardly from the head, and a siphon tube extending from the interior of the reservoir upwardly through the flange exteriorly of the compressor to a delivery end opposite the opening, the compressor having an auxiliary opening facing the tube and an upper surface of the flange.
8. In a spray device, a gas compressor havin g adelivery opening in its head, a reservoir for liquid below the compressor, a flange projecting forwardly from the head, and a siphon tube supported by the flange and head extending from the interior of the reservoir upwardly through the flange exteriorly of thecompressor to a delivery end opposite the opening, the compressor having an auxiliary opening facing t e tube and an upper surface of the flan e.
4. In a spray evice, a gas compressor having a deliver opening in its head, a reservoir for liqui below the compressor, a flange projecting forwardly from the head, and a siphon tube extending from the interior of the reservoir upwardly through the flange exteriorly of the compressor to a delivery end opposite the deliverywpening, the flange and reservoir having an opening adjoining the tube, the compressor having an auxiliary opening facing the tube and an upper surface of the flange.
