Description
y 1935- Lo. ALTENBURGER 2,006,908
SPRAYER Filed Oct. '7, 1933 INVENTOR A TTORNE Vs Patented Jul 2, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPRAYER ings, Minn.
Application October 7,1933, Serial No. 692,582 2 Claims. (01. 299-89) The main object of this invention is to provide a sprayer of the hand type which may be handled or swung about quite roughly or vigorously in use without injuriously affecting the character of the spray.
A further object is to provide a sprayer having these advantages which is very simple and economical in structure.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to I follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a sprayer embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View mainly in central longitudinal section on line 2,-2 of Fig. 1'...
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, the cylinder I of the air pump constitutes a hand piece for manipulating the sprayer. The plunger 2 is provided with a plunger rod 3 having a hand piece 4 at its outer end.
At the front end of the cylinder is a forwardly tapered air chamber 5, the head 6 of the pump cylinder constituting a partition between the pump cylinder and the pressure chamber. The cylinder delivers to the pressure chamber through the return check valve 1.
The liquid receptacle 8 preferably cylindrical and horizontally disposed transversely below the pressure chamber communicates therewith through an opening 9.
The lower wall of the pressure chamber is, in the embodiment illustrated, cut out to receive a segment of the receptacle which is secured thereto by soldering or otherwise as desired to provide a tight joint.
The air pressure chamber is provided with a discharge nozzle [0 threaded to receive the nozzle or spray tip I l. I
The liquid or eduction tube I2 is supported in centered relation within the nozzle, a supporting spider I3 being provided within the air chamber. The tube is thus supported to depend through the opening 9 into the receptacle terminating at a point adjacent the bottom thereof.
- An inverted conical deflector or bafile I4 is secured to the topof the receptacle to embrace the opening 9 and depend a substantial distance within the receptacle, the liquid tube being disposed through this bafile tube. This baflie prevents liquid being splashed into the air pressure chamber and discharge through the nozzle which is objectionable in that it results in spitting or in varying the character of the spray or even resulting in the delivery of a substantially solid stream.
My improved sprayer may be handled quite vigorously or roughly in use without danger of splashing the liquid into the air chamber which results, asstated, in objectionably varying the character of the spray and a waste of the liquid.
I have illustrated my improvements in an embodiment which has proven very satisfactory commercially. I have not attempted to illustrate adaptations to other designs of sprayers as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a hand sprayer, the combination of an air pump cylinder provided at its front end with an air pressure chamber and having a check valve delivery connection thereto, a cylindrical receptacle mounted transversely on the underside of said air pressure chamber and communicating therewith through a central opening in the top of the receptacle, a spray nozzle discharge for said pressure chamber, a liquid tube operatively associated with said nozzle and depending into said receptacle through said opening in the top thereof, and an inverted conical splash bafile secured at its top to the receptacle within said opening and depending into the receptacle a substantial distance.
2. In a hand sprayer, the combination with an air pump cylinder having at its front end a downwardly tapered air pressure chamber provided with a bottom opening and terminating in a spray nozzle in line with the bottom of the air pump cylinder, of a cylindrical liquid container mounted transversely on the under side of said air pressure chamber at the edge of said bottom opening and having a central top opening placing the eontainer in communication with the air pressure chamber, an inverted conical splash baffle connected at its upper edge to the top of the container within the edge of said central opening and .depending into the container a distance greater than half the radius of the latter, and a liquid tube connected at its front end to said spray nozzle and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom into said air pressure'chamber and then downwardly and rearwardly through said bafiie to a point adjacent the bottom of said container.
IRA O. ALTENBURGER.
