My invention is an improvement in tobacco cans or containers. 7
Manufacturers of smoking tobacco put the latter on the market in containers small enough to be conveniently carried in the users pockets but ordinarily these containers are not provided with means to direct the discharge of the material.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel container having a relatively large cover movl0 able to permit the container to be filled and pro vided with means forming part of said cover to control the direction of discharge of the material as it is withdrawn from the container.
In the drawing; Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fi 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device in a pouring position.
The dispensing device comprises abody ill made up of walls II and a bottom member l2 rigidly secured thereto. A cover I3 is hinged to one wall II and is made up of a main closure member I! and a pouring spout or auxiliarly cover l5. Member I4 is provided with flanges l6 and a re- :5 cess I'I extending inwardly from one edge. Spout l5 normally closes said recess and comprises a central portion II, and wings l9, each of which is provided with a flange 20, extending outwardly from the central plane of the spout and arranged so to engage the inner wall of member H to limit movement of spout l5. Portion I8 is extended beyond wings I! to provide a tip 2|.
A pair of tabs 22 extends from one wall II, a tab ll extends from pouring spout l5 and a 35 pair of tabs extends from closure member I. These tabs extend around a hinge pintle 26, which is secured rigidly to the tab 24 or to either pair 22 or 25. In the preferred form, tab 24 is received in the space between tabs 22, which in 4- turn are received in the space between tabs 25.
In use, the entire cover l3 may be opened to permit the body member to be filled, after which the cover is closed. When the user desires to fill his pipe, the spout may be swung around the 4:, hinge pintle and used to direct tobacco into the pipe bowl as shown in Fig. 3. While the device is particularly useful as a pocket receptacle for tobacco, it may obviously be made of suitable proportions and changed somewhat to increase its fieldof usefulness as a dispenser of granular materials. I, therefore, do not wish to be restricted to the exact form shown or restricted beyond the terms of the appended claims.
I .claim as my invention 1. A dispensing device comprising a hollow body member, having an open end; a cover for closing the same; and a hinge structure connecting said cover to said body member; said cover comprising a main closure member, provided with a recess extending inwardly from one edge thereof, and an auxiliary closure member forming a spout and arranged to close said recess; and said hinge structure comprising tab means, extending in parallel planes from said body member and from said closure members, and a common pintle for said closure members, encircled by said tab means and secured rigidly to the tab means extending from one of said members.
2. A device of the type described in claim 1, in which the tab means carried by the main closure member are arranged on opposite sides of the recess therein and define a space receiving the tab means of the other members.
3. A device of the type described in claim 1, in which the tab means of the body member and main closure member define spaces receiving the tab means extending respectively from the auxiliary closure member and from the body member.
4. In a dispensing device, the combination with a hollow body member, having an open end; of a cover, comprising a main closure member and an auxiliary closure member; and a single hinge pintle connected to each of said members to join an edge of the cover to the adjacent end of one wall of the body member; said main closure member having a recess extending inwardly from said edge and said auxiliary member comprising a central portion adapted to close said recess, parallel wing members and flanges extending therefrom and arranged to cooperate with the main closure member'to restrict movement of the auxiliary closure member, said wing members being arranged to form with the central portion of the auxiliary closure member a pouring spout to direct the movement of material poured through said recess.
