4 Claims. (Cl. 21o-161) This invention relates to strainers and has for its object the permanent securing of the strainer handle to the strainer frame in such manner that the frame is reinforced throughout by the handle and handle frame and at the same time securing the wire gauze bowl to the strainer frame in such manner that the frame of the handle assists in securing the gauze in position and the gauze will be permanently and xedly secured to the frame.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be apparent, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein':
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a strainer constructed in accordance with the present invention:
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof: and
Fig. 3 is a transverse fragmentary section through the strainer frame being taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 1 to illustrate the mounting of the handle frame and the cooperation between the strainer frame and the gauze.
Heretofore, it has been usual and customary to construct a strainer with a. relatively wide metal strainer frame. The gauze of the strainer is seamed to the lower edge of this frame while the upper edge of the frame is bent outwardly, downwardly and inwardly to create a bead which finishes off the upper edge of the frame. It has been customary to secure the handle to the strainer frame by creating a wire handle frame which embraces and bears against the outer surface of the strainer frame between its edges. The wire handle frame is provided with a protruding shankupon which the handle may be secured. It is to be noted that there is nocooperation in this prior type of strainer between the handle frame and the seam whereby the gauze of the strainer bowl is attached to the strainer frame and -that the handle frame performs no part or function in reinforcing and bracing the strainer frame. Furthermore, the handle frame is entirely exposed and may be, and frequently is, intentionally or unintentionally removed from the strainer frame.
The present invention has in view an entire arrangement of the strainer frame and its coaction with the gauze of the strainer bowl and the handle frame whereby the gauze willrrbe sopermanently and securely fastened to the strainer frame that the possibility of disengagement is eliminated and the' handle frame is entirely engaged and covered by the strainer frame. In this manner the handle frame not only is concealed and not susceptible of removal from the strainer site side or half of the ring or handle frame I6 frame, but also helps to reinforce the strainer frame and to assist in maintaining the permanent joint or seam between the strainer frame and the gauze of the strainer bowl.
Reference being had more particularly to the 5 drawing, I6 designates the wire gauze bowl of a strainer which may partake of any suitable shape and size in the finished product, and II indicates the strainer frame having an inwardly extending flange I2 at its upper edge and a similar flange I3 at its lower edge.
A wire Il, here shown as round but which may be of any suitable shape, is bent to create a pair of outstanding arms I5 whereby one side of the strainer may be supported upon the lip of a coacting vessel and a loop or ring I6 which constitutes the handle frame. A handle I1 is formed from the frame I6 and is diametrically opposed to the arms I5. It is to be understood that the formation of the wire Il into the elements aforesaid does not necessarily require that the wire constitute a single unitary piece which is formed into the handle frame I6, the arms I5 and handle I1. This wire may be of one or more pieces as indicated by the joints I8 in the drawing. Inthe illustrated construction one section of wire I4 forms half of the ring or handle frame I6 and carries the outstanding arms I5, while the opposite or coacting section of wire I4 forms the oppo- 30 and carries the protruding handle I1.
The wire Il forming the ring or handle frame I6, either in one or two pieces, is placed within the strainer frame II to rest against the flange I3, at the lower edge thereof with the arms I!v and the handle I1 projecting through the cut away portions I9 in the frame II. Th ilange I3 is then bent inwardly and upwardly to closely and snugly embrace and engage the frame I6.
'I'he bowl Il of the strainer is then placed with the frame II and the edge of the wire gauze` forming the strainer bowl is then bent outwardly over the wire I4 and the edge of the lower flange I3 of the frame II after which the upper flange I2 of said frame is bent inwardly and downwardly so that the edge thereof bears upon the gauze of the strainer bowl III and engages it between the edge of the ilange I2 and the bodyof the wire Il. The edge portion 20 of the strainer bowl thereby becomes coiled or bent within the 50 narige I2 and is entirely encasedA thereby.
,From the foregoing it is manifest that the outer surface of the strainer frame II .is uninterrupted and merges with the flanges I2 and Il. Upon the interior of the strainer the flanges I2 55 and I3 create two beads, the former a bead which contains the edge portion 20 of the gauze of the strainer bowl I0 and engages the gauze of the strainer bowl between its edge and the wire I4, and the latter a bead in which is contained the wire I4, of the handle frame I6. Manifestly, therefore, the strainer bowl l0 is permanently and rigidly secured to the frame. li against displacement or disengagement while the wire lll of the handle frame i6 is similarly secured to the handle frame to assist in maintaining the gauze of the bowl i0 in engagement with the frame Il, as well as reinforce the latter.
In this manner a strainer is constructed having great durability and strength and at the same time being possessed of an increased straining area.
What is claimed is:
l. A strainer comprising a trame, a reinforcing member, said frame having its lower edge bent into engagement with and encircling substantially a major portion oi the surface of said reenforcing member, and a strainer bowl having its edge portion engaging only the upper and inner portion of the surface of the reinforcing member and said frame having its upper edge bent inwardly and downwardly into engagement with a part of the edge portion of the strainer bowl to maintain the same in engagement with the reinforcing member aforesaid.
2. A strainer comprising a frame, a reinforcing member, said frame having its lower edge bent inwardly to engage said reinforcing member, and
a strainer bowl having its edge portion bent outwardly to bear on said reinforcing member, and bent to create a peripheral enlargement positioned above said reinforcing member, said frame having its upper edge bent inwardly and downwardly over said enlargement to engage the strainer bowl between it and the said reinforcing member.
3. A strainer comprising a frame, a reinforcing member, the lower edge of said frame being bent inwardly and upwardly to engage and partly house said reinforcing member, and a strainer bowl having its edge portion bent outwardly to rest on said reinforcing member, said bowl also having a peripheral enlargement at the extremity of its edge portion positioned above said reinforcing member, the upper edge or said frame being bent inwardly and downwardly over said enlargement.
4. A strainer comprising a frame, a reinforcing member, the lower edge of said frame being bent inwardly and upwardly to engage said reinforcing member, and a strainer bowl having its edge portion bent outwardly to bear on said reinforcing member, said bowl also having a peripheral enlargement at the extremity of its edge portion positioned above said reinforcing member, the upper edge of the irame being bent inwardly and downwardly over said enlargement to line grip the strainer bowl between its edge and the said reinforcing member.
