Description

June 25, 1935. cos y CONSTRUCTION OF BRUSH Filed Nov. 21, 1954 INVENTOR n Y m w m 0 O c w m A 0 I1 R W Patented June 25, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 21, 1934, Serial No. 754,140 In Great Britain June 17, 1933 2 Claims.
The object of my invention is to construct the back of the brush so that it cannot, under any circumstances, be positioned with the bristles vertical on the back when laid down on a support, but will always find a position on its side with the ends of the bristles and the back resting on the support, thus allowing for proper drainage of the watery material from between the tufts of bristles or the bristles.
For the purpose of my invention, I construct the back or holder of the bristles or tuft of bristles of spherical shape with one portion or end cut away to produce a fiat surface to which the tufts of bristles or bristles are secured in the usual manner.
Should the brush be positioned on a support with the bristles uppermost, the weight of the bristles and the watery substance retained by them will overbalance the back and cause the brush to lie on its side, so that the bristles will be at an angle and, with the back will rest on the support to which it is applied, with the flat portion at the vertical or a slightangle thereto, and so allow of a proper drainage, and to ensure a proper positioning of the brush, a weight or weighting material is applied to the back near the bristles, and this may be effected by drilling a hole in the back and applying a lead plug, so that there is a greater preponderance of weight on the bristle side, which will effectively ensure the back and bristles assuming their proper position on the support when the brush is laid thereon.
My invention will be more particularly understood from the following description aided by the construction shown in the annexed drawing.
Figure 1 is a side view of a brush embodying the present invention with the bristles in lowermost position. Figure 2 is a plan view, and Figure 3 a side view of the brush shown in Fig. 1,
showing the same lying on its side. According to the present invention, the back I is made spherical in shape with a portion cut away as at 2, leaving a flat surface in which holes are formed for receiving and holding the bristles 3 in an ordinary manner, and in the back I near the bristles 3 is formed a hole, say half way through the back, and in this hole is inserted a lead plug 4.
When the brush is laid on a support with the bristles uppermost, the lead weight 4 assisted by the weight of the wet bristles, will cause the back to roll over, so that the bristles will rest on the support, and should it then roll about, the lead weight 4 preponderating, will finally cause the brush to resume the position shown in Figure 3, with the weight 4 at the lowermost point.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:
1. A brush 1 comprising a back of spherical shape and cut away at one side, bristles secured to said cut-away side oi the back and projecting therefrom, and a weight in the back between said cut-away side thereof and a diametrical plane through the back opposite to said cut-away side and providing a preponderance of weight adjacent to the bristles to cause the bristles and the back to rest on a support when placed thereon. I
2. A brush comprising a back of spherical shape and cut away at one side, bristles secured to said cut-away side of the back and projecting therefrom, and a plug of relatively heavy material fitted into one side of the back and extending only partially therethrough adjacent to the cut-away side thereof and providing a preponderance of weight at the bristle side of the brush.
