(c1. 67433)' 'Ivhis linvention vrelates to a flash-light appa# ratus for use as a signalling device or for the temporaryilluminatio'n of objects for photographic or other purposes, and consists broadly in the provision of a cylinder which may be connected like a gun barrel to a rie butt or to a pistol handle and which is closed at the free end by a grate against which a flash-light cartridge can be held and ignited by means of a spring pressed plunger'released by means of a trigger, the cartridges being fed through a lateral port in the cylinder from an annular magazine which 'is rotatable about the cylinder and whichis rotated by the feeding mechanism.

The apparatus comprises a cylinder I which may be connected either to a pistol handle 2 as shown in Fig. 14, or to a rifle butt 32 as shown in Fig. 15. The free end of the cylinder is closed by a grate I6 one bar of which carries an inwardly projecting firing pin I1. Mounted rotatably on the cylinder is an annular cartridge magazine II which is divided by means of partitions 26 into chambers adapted to receive flash-light cartridges. The chambers are open towards the centre of the magazine, and the cartridges are retained in all except the top chamber by means of a segmental shell 33 connected to a rigid wall I4 over the edge of which a flange 35 on the magazine engages, as shown in Fig. 4. A spring pressed ball I5, housed in a socket on the Wall I4, is adapted to snap into recesses 28 in the adjacent wall I3 of the magazine for retaining the latter with any one of the cartridge chambers in the top position. In this position of a cartridge chamber, the enclosed cartridge drops through the shell 33 and through a lateral port 34 in the cylinder I into the latter. A sleeve 9, which is displaceable inside the cylinder I, normally closes the port 34 and is tted with a linger piece I0 whereby it can be displaced for opening the port. vThe ngerpiece projects vthrough a slot '30m the 'cylinder I land is adapted to engage in longltudinal'slots2'9 made in asleeve 3l which is mounted on the cylinder l and which is connected to the wall I2 of the magazine liso as yti torotate together with the latter. The cylinder I contains a hollow plunger 3 which is guided, partly in the sleeve 9 and partly on a bolt 4 secured to the rear end of the cylinder. A lspring 5 in the plunger bears at one end against the closed end of the plunger and at the other end against the bolt 4 and urges the plunger in a forward direction for pressing an admitted cartridge against the grade ls. A 35 finger piece 6, which engages the plunger through a longitudinal slot in the cylinder, is used for retracting the plunger and limits the movements of the latter by abutment against stops 1 and 8. In the retracted position of the plunger the latter is retained by a pivoted catch 20 which for this purpose snaps into engagement with a notch I9 in the plunger. The catch is connected by means of a link 2I vto a'trigger 23 by means of which it can be actuated for releasing the plunger, the plunger being controlled by a spring 22. being controlled by a spring 22.
Each cartridge is provided with a fulminate and is adapted to be ignited by the impact of this fulminate with the ring pin I1. i
To operate the apparatus, the plunger 3 is first retracted by means of a linger piece 6 into the position shown in Fig. l, it being retained in this position by the catch 2U. Thereupon the linger piece I0 is moved from the position shownl CAB lshell 33 into the cylinder I.

being released by means of the trigger 23, springs` forwards and forces the admitted cartridge against the grate I6, andthe cartridge willbe ignited by impact with the firing pin I1. Fig. 3 shows the burning cartridge 25, and Fig. shows how the cartridge is maintained bythe plunger in contact with the grate during its consumption and diminution.

A flash-light apparatus comprisingarcyl-I- inder Vhaving a lateral port, a grate structure closingone end of said cylinder, an annular magazine for flash-light cartridges adapted to revolve about said cylinder over saidwport, means. for feeding. cartridges fromfthe` magazine through thev port into the cylinder, a spring-controlled plunger in said cylinder adapted to `project admitted cartridges againstL said grate, means for retracting the plunger from the grate infopposition to the spring pressure., means for retaining the plunger in retracted position, meansriorreleasing the plunger, and means operated bythe impact of the plunger, for igniting the cartridge behind the grate. f I- 2. A structure as claimed in claim I wherein the means for feeding cartridges into the cylinder comprises a sleeve arranged outside the cylinder and connected to the magazine, a'sleeve arranged within the cylinder between the latter and the plunger and adapted to be displaced for opening and shutting the port of thecylinder, and a finger piece connected to said latter sleeve for the displacement of the latter and projecting 'through a slot in the cylinder and adapted to engage in slots in the iirst mentioned sleeve, the slots in the latter being narrow and open-ended foradmitting the finger piece, and the slot in the cylinder being triangular" and arranged' so that the finger piece will, by following the edges of the triangular slot, displace the inner sleeve for opening the port, turn the magazine for discharging a cartridge through the port, and
then enter a fresh slot in the sleeve.
3. A structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for retaining-the plunger in retracted position consists of a pivoted catch adapted to engage in anotch in the plunger, and wherein the means for releasing the plunger consists of a. triggerin operative connection with said catch.
