D. A. MUNN TOOL , Original Filed Nov. 27, 1933 H A A s L m m M W the slot within the head of a machine screw or the I Patented June 25, 1935 TOOL Daniel A. Munn,
Burlingame, Calif.
Application November 27, 1933, Serial No. 699,869 Renewed May 6, 1935 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in pliers wherein each jaw is provided with an edged rib arranged at right angles to the rib in the opposite jaw, one of said ribs being provided to engage like and the other end being provided to engage or bite into the opposite end of a screw whose length is within the compass of said jaws, to facilitate turning of said screw, and to maintain engaging relation of one rib with its slot.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved article of manufacture comprising a plier having improved means for maintaining engagement with a screw to facilitate turning of the same.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pair of pliers having improved means for engaging and turning short screws whose lengths are. within the compass of the jaws of said pliers.
A further object is to provide improved means for tightening or loosening short pivot screws of shears and similar articles where both ends of the screw are exposed.
A still further object is to provide a pair of pliers having improved means for retaining engagement of an edged rib with a screw slot to facilitate turning of said screw.
A still further object is to provide improved means for effectively and positively engaging both ends of short screws whereby said screws may be effectively turned.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the device disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved device illustrating its application to a short pivotscrew;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the face of the lower Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the face of the upper jaw; and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of both jaws.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l is used usual pivot 2 and jaws 3 provided with edged ribs and 4 whose faces are 5 and 6 respectively,
said ribs 5 and 6 being preferably formed integrally with their respective jaws to provide rigidity and economy of manuf angles to each other as ing.
The ribs are provided acture arranged at right disclosed in the drawto engage the slot 1 as well as the opposite end of a machine screw 8 or the like when both ends of said; screw are exposed as where used in securing two. pieces together, pivotally or otherwise, and when the length of said screw is within the compass of said jaws.
When either jaw is engaging the slot 1 the pliers are operated to tightly close the opposite jaw upon the opposite end of the screw 8 and thereby not only effectively retain the engagement of the slotengaging jaw but also to more firmly grip the entire screw and secure a, lateral leverage not obtainable with an ordinary screw-driver.
When a screw is thus engaged, a greater purchase upon said screw is obtained and tightened or rusted screws may be easily turned with the leverage and purchase provided by means of my improved device.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim isone end and the opposite blunt end of a machine screw whose length is within the compass of said jaws,
to facilitate turning of said screw, said ribs being positioned at right angles to each other whereby either rib may engage said screw slot when said slot is in a position relatively inaccessible to the opposite rib.
