UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EMILY A. STEARS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOUSEHOLD-PRESSES FOR FRUITS, 840.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,487, dated February 19, 1878; application led October 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMILY A. STEARs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Household-Press, of which the following is a specication:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the perforated cylinder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to presses for household use; and it consists in a boxhavin g formed on it a support for the nut of the compressingscrew, and containing a drawer for receiving the juice expelled by the press, and having fitted to it a removable perforated cylinder for containing the article to be pressed.
In the drawings, Ais a box having an open side for receiving the drawer B, which entirely fills the lower portion of the box, and is provided with a front that extends upward over the face of the box.l The portion of the box that is above the draweropening projects downward into the drawer a short distance to conduct downward any juice that may spurt in that direction during the operation of pressing. The drawer is sloped from its front downward and backward to admit of removing it from the box. A cylindrical receptacle, C, having at about the center of its length a square flange, D, is tted to a circular aperture in the top of the box A, and the portion that projects downward into the box is perforated with anumber of small holes. tom of the receptacle is iiat, and perforated in the same manner as the sides. The ilange D is provided with lips a. on two opposite edges, which project downward over the corners of the box. Standards E project from the top of the box at its sides, and are connected by the cross-bar F, in which is formed a nut for receiving the screw G. A follower, H, is fixed to the lower end of the screw, so that it turns with it, and is fitted to the receptacle C.
The bot- A hand-wheel, b, is attached to the upper end of the screw, for operating the press. A crank may be substituted for this wheel, if desired.
The box A is provided with ears I, which are perforated to receive screws for fastening the press to the table.
The receptacle O is lled, after retractin g the screw Gr sufficiently to admit of introducing the article to be pressed between the follower H and the receptacle. The article is com.,- pressed by turning the screw, which carries the follower downward into the receptacle, and the process is facilitated by the wringing action of the follower, which, being xed to the screw, rotates with it. The juice, as it is forced through the apertures of the receptacle, is received in the drawer B. As the portion of the receptacle from which the juice escapes projects into the box A, none of the juice can spurt out, so as to be lost or injure the clothes of the person using the press.
A spout, d, is attached to the drawer-front, and is provided with a strainer, e. An opening is made through the front of the drawer, which communicates with the spout. The liquid is strained by this device as it is poured from the drawer.
The cylindrical receptacle is readily cleaned by removing it from the box A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The perforated receptacle C, having a central iiange, l), the screw-actuated follower H, and the box A, having the drawer B, in combination, as hereincshown and described.
2. The combination ofthe spout d, having the strainer e, with the drawer B, as herein shown and described.
EMILY A. STEARS.
