This invention relates to locking devices for sliding closures and has particular reference to a locking device for sliding window sashes of the standard household type. v A
The invention broadly aims to provide a sash lock mounted upon the upper rail of the inner sash adjacent one side thereof and which look is so constructed and arranged as to exert a thrust or force diagonally of the two sashes so as to cause the inner-and outer sashes to bind in opposite vertical corners of the frame in order to' positively preclude relative movement of the sashes when locked.
The invention further resides in a lock which includes a slide member diagonally movable with reference to the inner sash and which is so contoured as to engage the adjacent faces of the inner vertical corners of the outer sash.
The invention more particularly includes a base member adapted to be fixedly mounted on the upper rail of the inner sash, a slide member carried by the-base member for guided sliding movement diagonally of the sash rail, and a screw threadedly engaging the base member and swivelly connected with the slide member which is so constructed and arranged as to permit of the convenient assemblage of the device.
With these and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the appended claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within their scope. a

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates the inner and B the outer of a pair of sliding window sashes and C the window frame.
The locking device constituting the present invention and adapted for use in connection with this type of window sashes, includes a'base member Hi which is fixedly mounted upon the upper rail of the inner window sash Av adjacent one side thereof andwhich carries a slide mem.-
ber ll having an angulated head l2, which head is contoured to engage the adjacent. faces of the inner vertical corner 'ofthe outer sash B. The base member I6 includes a substantiall L-shaped body having a vertically disposed guide wing l3 extending diagonally across the upper sashrail, and a vertically'arranged bear ing wingl i extending in the plane of thesash and having a depending attaching flange 15 which overlies the front face ofthe upper sash rail and is provided with an opening l5 therethrough for receiving a screw or other means for aflixing the same to the inner. sash 2A. The guide wing I3 is also provided at its lower edge with an integral horizontally disposed flange I! having a pair of screw openings l8 for receivd ing screws or other means for attaching thebase min superimposed position upon the..upper sash rail.

The guide wing I3 is of cross sectional channel-shaped configuration having a depending spaced guide flange l9 along its upper edge and which forms therewith a longitudinally extending channel 2 opening through the inner end thereof. member I I is also provided with a longitudinally extending channel 22 in the upper face thereof and with a vertically disposed rearwardly extending guide flange 23, the upper portion of which is formed as a continuation of the flange 24 formed by the channel 22. The flange 24 and the channel 22 of the slide member ll slidably interfits with the channel 20 and the flange l9 respectively of the guide wing 13 for guiding the sliding member diagonally of the sashes and for causing the angulated head 12 The angulated head l2 of the slide to exert a thrust against the adjacent faces I of the inner corner of the outer sash B in the direction of the arrow 25 so as to cause the inner and outer sashes to bind in the opposite vertical corners D and E respectively of the window frame C, while an inward thrust is exerted on the inner sash to cause its inner face to bind against the face F of the frame C.
The head l2 of the slide member H is provided with a keyhole slot 26 extending inwardly from the bottom face thereof and in which is swivelly received the enlarged head 21 of. a screw 28, threadedly engaging the bearing wing [4 for effecting the sliding movement of the slide member with reference to the base memher I 0 and for causing the head l2 of the sliding member II to be impinged against the inner vertical edge of the outer sash B, when the screw is rotated by means of its manipulating head 29. By providing the head of the slide member with the keyhole slot 26 which opens through and extends inwardly from the bottom face thereof, it will be apparent that the assembly of the screw 28 with the slide membenmay be inexpensively accomplished.

A lock for sliding window sashes including a base member adapted to be fixedly mounted upon the upper rail of the inner sash, a slide member carried by the base for guided sliding movement diagonally of said sash rail and having a portion conforming to and adapted to enage with the inner vertical corner; of the outer sash for exerting a thrust diagonally of the two sashes to cause said sashes to bind in opposite vertical corners of the window frame, and means for effecting movement of said slide member with reference to the base member.
5. A lockfor sliding window sashes including a base member adapted to be fixedly mounted upon the upper rail of the inner sash and consisting-of a substantially L-shaped body having a vertically disposed guide wing extending diagonally-across said sash rail and a bearing wing disposedvertically and extending in the plane of the sash and having a depending attaching flange overlyingthe front face of said sash rail;
a slide member interengaging guide means on the-. outersash forexerting a thrust to cause said sashesto bind:in the windowframe;
