The invention relates to an embodiment of the mechanism described in the specification filed with our application Serial No. 618,554 for the purpose of placing a plurality of empty 5 cop tubes simultaneously on a group of spindles in a cop winding machine, and dotting the cops simultaneously ,when they have been wound. Our present invention is concerned with the application of such mechanism to machines in which the spindles are not of the full length of the cop tubes, but are stub spindles extending only a short distance into the tubes at one end, and having pegs facing them, for supporting the tubes at the other end. The group of spindles on which tubes are placed simultaneously, and from which the cops are dofied simultaneously, may comprise the entire bank of spindles along one side of the machine, or only a portion of the bank.
This application is a division of the above application, Serial No. 618,554, filed June 21, 1932.
In our present invention, as in that set forth in our application Serial No. 618,554, we use a movable frame or carrier with mechanism for raising and lowering it, and moving it to and from the spindles, and also for moving it along the bankoi spindles.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the machine with certain parts in elevation along one of the spindle stations,
Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 showing the positioning of the parts preparatory to the stripping operation,
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 showing the positioning of the parts following the stripping operation and preparatory to the 40 mounting operation,
Fig. 4 is' a view corresponding to Fig 1 showing the positioning of the parts at the conclusion of the mounting operation and preparatory to the winding operation,
.Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of a detail of Fig. 1.
The spindles I, which may for example be driven by friction wheels 2, 3, are stub spindles having tips la for engaging the cop tubes (Fig. 3). They are faced by a bar 81, which is carried by, slidable rods 88 having springs 83 coiled thereon. This bar carries pegs 86 for engaging the tips of the cop tubes held by the stub spindles.
The carrier X for the tubes consists of frame 'half the pitch of the spindles.
The carrier is supported by rollers 39a, 39b on cranks 40a, 40b, the cranks being fixed in pairs to rods 4la, which are rotatable in bearings 44 and are also axially movable, portions thereof being in the form ofracks 41b of circular cross section engaged with pinions 45 on a shaft 45. According to the length of the carrier there are two rods Ma, or more, and the cranks are connected by connecting rods so that they rotate together when rotation is imparted to one of the rods Ma. This may be done by means of a handle 42. When the shaft 45 is rotated all the rods 4la. are moved axially. -A receptacle 52 for the defied cops 31a is suspended from.

When the winding of the cops is finished, the carrier X is lifted by rotation of the cranks from the position shown in .Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, and this causes the frame member or longitudinal bar 34a to engage behind the bar 81. Then the carrier is moved a short distance to the left, as viewed in Fig. 2, and the bar, 81 is thus withdrawn from the cops, so that the pegs 86 release the cops. At the same time the frame member or longitudinal bar 34b, or a blade 84 at the top of it (Figs. 1' and 6) pushes the cops oil? the spindles, and the cops fall into the receptacle 52 (Figs. 3 and 4). The carrier X is moved transversely of the spindies, as indicated by the arrow 15 or 15a in Fig. 5, and travels through a distance equal to This movement may be executed by means of longitudinal slots in the carrier cooperating with bolts on the frame. This places the empty cop tubes in line with the spindles. The carrier is then moved towards the spindles, releasing the bar 81 with the pegs 86 and pushing the cop tubes on to the spindles. The carrier is then lowered, leaving the tubes supported by the spindles and pegs, and a fresh set of cops can be wound.
What is claimed is,
1. In a cop winding machine, a plurality of juxtaposed stub winding spindles and opposed yielding pegs in alignment with said spindles for supporting cop tubes between said spindles and pegs; a cop handling unit adjacent said spindles and pegs having thereon longitudinal bars and support-means between said bars for a plurality of juxtaposed empty cop tubes, said cop han dling unit being normally disposed in a plane displaced from the plane of said spindles and pegs; means for actuating said unit transversely of the spindle axes to bring said unit into position preparatory to releasing the pegs from the cops andstripping the cops from the spindles, and means for actuating said unit in a direction parallel to the peg and spindle axes to effect said stripping and releasing operations. In a cop winding machine, a plurality of juxtaposed stub winding spindles andopp'osed yielding pegs in alignment with said, spindles for supporting cop tubes between said spindles and pegs; a cop handling unit adjacent said spindles and pegs having thereon longitudinal bars, supporting means between saidbars for a plurality of juxtaposed empty cop .tubes offset from the stub spindles and pegs longitudinally of the machine frame, and means for receiving the finished cops, said cop handling unit being normally disposed in a plane displaced fromthefplane of said spindles and pegs; means for; actuating said unit transversely of the spindle axes to bring said unit into position preparatoryto releasing the pegs from the cops and stripping the cops from the spindles; and means for actuating said unit in a direction parallel to the peg and spindle axes to effect said stripping and releasing operations, said cop handling unit being shiftable longitudinally of the machine frame to place the empty .cop tubes in alignmen}; with said spindles and pegs for engag e. ment. thereby upon themovement of said unit from, the field pf operation of said yieldable,p izs.
