UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
AUGUST ZIEGENHAGEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEM ENT IN Fl RE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 200,370,, dated February 12, 1878; application filed December 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Aueusr ZIEGENHAGEN, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, referencebein g had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fire-escape arranged in relation to a window, and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in the class of fire-escapes which are arranged to be concealed in a box or casing forming an article of furniture in a room when not in use; and the invention consists in the combination of parts whereby the apparatus is secured in a room, and arranged to be moved under or in front of a window when required for use, all as hereinafter fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawing, A represents a box, provided with a hinged cover, a. J ournaled in said box is a reel, B, upon which the fire-escape ladder C is wound when not in use. Upon the shaft of the reel, and outside of the box, is arranged ratchet-wheel c, and pivoted to the box is a pawl, d, by which the reel is held in any position desired. D represents a crank-handle for turning the reel.
The ladder is provided with a weight, E, at its end, which, when thrown out of the window, unwinds the ladder on the reel. This ladder works over the rollers F F-the roller F arranged in the box A, and the roller F secured to thecasing of the window outside of the building, all as clearlyshown in Fig. 2.
G G represent two parallel rods secured a short distance from the side of the room by the plates H H, secured respectively to the floor'and side of the room, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The front side of the box is provided with ears I, arranged near the middle and bottom of the box, and within which the rods G G fit, and by which means the box is secured in the room, but allowed to be moved along in the room on said rods. It will be observed that the rods extend along under or in front of the window, and to one side thereof, so that the apparatus can be moved from under or in front of the window when not desired for use. In case of a fire the apparatus is moved under or in front of the window in the room, the ladder thrown out of the window, when the weight upon the end of the ladder will unwind it from the reel, the roller F being located far enough away from the window-casing to keep the ladder from coming in contact with the outside of the building.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In a fire-escape, the combination of the box A, provided with the ears I and the rod or rods G, secured along the side of the room, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
AUGUST ZIEGENHAGEN. Witnesses:
