SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,132, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed March 6, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB HAEGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garfield, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in fire-escapes; and it has for its object to provide means of escape from the upper stories of a burning building at any number of points which may be desired, and which, in the case of a hotel, may be put in operation from the office or any other fixed locality. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 8 is a detail view of bell-crank lever I, part of frame B, (in section,) cord K, and link S.

B is the frame of the machine.
0 Q are rollers, upon which flexible ladders or ropes D, having knots at suitable intervals, are to be wound up. Each of these rollers has one or more notches in its periphery, which are intended to receive the points of the pawls E, whereby the rollers are held in position when they have been wound up. Each pawl is connected to a T-shaped plate, M, by means of rods or links F. This plate is supported in a horizontal position by a standard, G, and is pivoted thereto so that it may move freely in a horizontal plane, and at one end has a rod or link, S, by means of which it is connected to a bell-crank lever, I, attached to one side of the frame B,- from which is hung a cord, K, which may be carried to the office (if the building is provided with one) or to any other place adapted to the purpose. The rollers G Oare each provided with ashaft, L, journaled to the frame 13. The shafts L project outwardly from the frame, so as to receive a suitable handle, by means of which the rollers may be wound up. The frame may be attached to the outside of the building or to the roof in any convenient manner, and any number of rollers and plates M and chains, ladders, or knotted ropes may be employedsay one over each of the upper windows, whether there be two or more--and a pull upon the cordK will cause -the whole number to descend and enable the occupant of each room in the entire to escape.

In a fire-cscape, the frame 13, and the rollers O 0, having shafts L, provided with ropes or flexible ladders D, in combination with pawls E, rods or links F, plate M, and bell-crank lever I, provided with cord K, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
