IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-SADDLE TREES.'

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,280, datedFebruary 12, 1878; application filed December 29, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. GORDON, of Keota, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Harness-Trees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my harness-tree, and Fig. 2 is a perspective detail thereof.

My invention relates to harness-saddle trees; and it consists in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.

The harness-tree consists of three pieces", viz., a center piece, A, and two side pieces, B B, united to the center piece by joints at a a. The center piece A has the loop 0 attached to it, and is very short, as shown.

The check-hook D is fastened to this piece by bolt and nut, or other suitable means. At each side of the center piece A is a projecting tongue, a, which fits in a corresponding slot made in the upper end of the side piece B, and

a pin or rivet, b, projecting from each side of the tongue, and passing through the flanges of the part B, forms the joint.

The tree is made in any ordinary form, with side flanges, so as to form a groove for the skirt.

E is the pad, in which are embedded suitable nuts for an ordinary stove-bolt, d, passing through theupper end of each side piece B; also for the terrets G G and bolts H H.

By thus constructing the saddle-tree with a joint on each side of the center, it is rendered self-adjusting, so as to fit the back of any horse.

I am aware that it is not new to make a saddle-tree of three parts hinged together, and such I do not claim, broadly; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The improved harness-saddle tree consisting of the center piece A, having loop 0, pro jecting tongues a, and projecting rivets b, and the grooved or slotted end pieces B B, as shown and described.
