Attorney Patented May 14, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLLAR PROTECTING DEVICE William Jacob Lanyon, Hanover, N. H.
Application July 2, 1934, Serial No. 733,505
1 Claim.
device, the general object of the invention being to provide a band with adjustable means for holding the band expanded in a collar of a laundered shirt or the like so as to protect the collar from being crushed or pressed out of shape when packed with other laundry.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in, which:--
Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use in a laundered shirt.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the device.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing how the locking means operate to hold one end of the device in position.
As shown in this drawing, the device comprises a long strip I of cardboard or any other suitable material which is adapted to be placed in the collar 2 of a shirt A or the like. Adjacent one end the strip is provided with a row of transversely extending slits 3 which are spaced apart to form the tongues 4. Below this row a second row of V-shaped slits 5 are formed to provide a longitudinally extending row of substantially triangular spaced tongues 6.
Thus when the device is in use it is placed in the collar and then expanded to fit tightly with- This invention relates to a collar protecting.
in the collar and the device is held in expanded position by bending one of tongues 4 inwardly to engage an end of the strip as shown at 4' in Figure 3 and said end of the strip also being engaged with one of the triangular shaped 5 tongues 6 as shown in Figure 3.
Thus this device will hold the collar in shape and against being crushed when packed with other laundry or the like.
It is thought from the foregoing description 10 that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination,
and arrangement of the several parts provided 15 that such changes fall within the scope of the I appended claim.
What is claimed is:-
A collar protecting device comprising an elongated strip of bendable material having a straight end and a longitudinally extending row of spaced transverse slits in one side portion thereof, the slits extending inwardly from one side edge, each pair of slits forming a tongue adapted to be bent at right angles to the strip to form an abutment for said straight end of the strip to prevent contraction of the strip when the same is bent into substantially circular form to place in a collar, said strip also having a longitudinally extending row of substantially V-shaped slits in an intermediate part thereof, the V-shaped slits being spaced apart and forming substantially triangular-shaped tongues, any one of which is adapted to overlap said straight end of the strip.
WILLIAM JACOB LANYON.
