This invention relates to improvements in hangers for holding andsecuring a bathtub in position, and one of the objects of the same is vto provide an improved hanger of this character by means of the use of which the weight of thebathtub will be borne directly by the studding and not by the floor, andv whichstudding also supports the plastering or tiling, thereby obviating the dangerlof relative displacement of'onewith rel spect to vthe other, caused usually by the settling of the floor with the shrinkingof the floor joists and which settling results'in the formation of crevices or cracks between the edge of the bathtub and the wall of the room.

A further object of the invention is to providean improved hanger of'this character whichwill maintain a tight-sealing joint, thereby preventing water seepage around the edge of the tub.

After the sealing material 30 has been placed in position, the clamp member 26 is applied and secured in position by means of fastening bolts or screws 3| passing through the slots 27 and also through certain of the openings l8 in the body of the hanger l 5 and into the joists or uprights i9, and when the clamp member 26 is in position the laterally deflected portion 28 will project over the top edge of the rim of the tub. If desired, suitable packing 32 may be employed and arranged between the surface of the tub and the lower face of the deflected portion 28 of the clamp member 26, thereby not only serving as a means to form a liquid tight joint but also as a cushioning means to prevent-injury to the tub by the clamp member..

A fastening bolt 33 provided with a head 34, is inserted through the registering openings 29- H of the portion 28 of the clamp member 26 and of the portion it of the hanger l5, so that the head will engage the upper surface of the portion 28 of. the clamp member and the bolt is of a suiiicient length to project below the portion it of the hanger. A thumb or wing nut 35 is threaded upon. the bolt. 33 and by the adjustment of the nut 35, it will be manifest that the clamp'member 26 will be drawn toward the por tion It of the hanger and thereby effect a clamping of the rim of the bathtub to the hanger. The bolt 33 is preferably applied before the sealing material 36 is placed in position. -In applying the clamp member the screws or bolts 3| are adjusted so as to permit the clamp member to slide freely into clamping position-under the influence of the action of the nut 35, after which the screws or bolts 3! are tightened so as to hold the parts firmly in position. With this form'of theinvention it-will be manifest that the clamping member 26 willforce the rim of the tub against the laterally deflected portion 36 of the hanger; andthe fastening bolt 33 will be disposed in close proximityto'the peripheral edge of the rim, with the result that'the bolts 33 also serve as'a means for assisting in preventing the tub from tilting. withrespect to the hangers. I In this form of the invention the-clamping member 43 is provided with a laterally deflected portion M and a downwardly extending edge 45 so as to engage over the rim 46 of the tub, in V a manner to force the lateral ,edge of the tub rim against the downwardly projecting or upright portion 46 of the plate 23 so that any strain caused by the tendency of the tub to tilt with respect to the hanger would be resisted by the upright portion 40 of the plate 23, and the fastening bolts 33 would be relieved of all strain caused by such tendency to tilt.

Filling material 39 may be employed between the parts to form liquid tight joints.

In the form of the invention shown in Figure 8, the plate member 23 is provided with a cut out portion deflected-laterallyas at 4,8, shaped to cooperate with a laterally deflected portion at the lower end of the plate. These deflected portions 48 49 engage over the rim of the tub 22 to form a clamp and a. fastening bolt 50 having a head 5lpasses through registering apertures in theportions 48-49 and is provided with a nut flected portion 56 of the hangermember 51 and engages underthe-rim of the tub, serving as'a means for forcing the rim of the tub between the portions 48-49 of the hanger. A look nut 58 may be provided for'holding the screw in its adjusted position. V

In Figure 9 there is shown another form'of hanger 59 having a hook shaped portion 60- at the lower end thereof and the plate 23 is provided with an upwardly opening hook shaped extremity 6| seated withinthe hook shaped portion 60 of the hanger, a clamp member 62 co-operating with the hook shaped portion of the hanger for clamping the rim 63 of the tub. A fastening bolt 64 tends to drawthe clamping member toward the hook shaped portion of the hanger and suitable sealing material 30 is employed to form a-liquid tight joint.

Inthis form of the invention a screw 66 is threaded through a'portion of the hook shaped extremity of the hanger and engages the lower face of the flange 63. of the tub and tends to'force the rim or flange of the tub between the clamp and the hook shaped portion 60 of the hanger, a lock nut 51 being employed to hold the screw 66 in its adjusted position.

In Figure 11 there'is shown a modified form ofthe invention somewhat similar to the construction shown in Figure 8, in which the plate 23' is provided with a cut out portion 68 deflected downwardly so as to co-operate with an upwardly opening hook shaped portion 69 at the lower edge of the plate. The rim E0 of the tub passes between the portions 68 and 59, and packing or sealing material 30 may be arranged between the portions 68 and the upper surface of the tub, and sealing material 12 being employed to form a liquid tight joint. In this form of the invention a screw 13 is threaded through the upwardly opening hook shaped portion 14 of the hanger 15 to engage under the lower edge of the rim of the tub, and a lock nut 16 may be employed-for holding the screw 13 in its adjustedposition.

Any number of these hangers may be employed and may be suitably arranged; and when in position it will be manifest that the tub will be supported or' suspended from the uprights or joists of the building and in such a manner that all settling of the tub'with respect to the wall or plaster or tiling will be prevented, and which set tling generally occurs by shrinking of the floor upon which the tubs" usually sit and a shrinking of the floor joists. i

Furthermore, all seepage of water between the edge of the tub and the wall will be prevented by the sealing material, and by the use of these hangers and the distribution and arrangement of the same at different points around the periphery of the tub, it will be manifest that the tub will be held against any tendency to tilt due to any excessive strain or heavy weight placed upon any one portion of the tub, as the hanger members and the co-operating clamping devices serve as a means for preventing suchtilting movement.

While the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.

What is claimed as new is:-

1. A bathtub hanger comprising a supporting bracket provided with an upwardly opening hook shaped portion for suspending the tub above the floor and into which hook shaped portion the rim of the tub engages, means securing the hanger to an upright, a clamp connected with the hanger and engaging over the bathtub rim and co-operating with said hook shaped portion to clamp the rim therebetween, and a fastening device passing through the said clamp and the body of the hook shaped portion and beyond the edge of the bathtub rim.

2. A bathtub hanger comprising a supporting bracket provided with a laterally projecting portion for engaging under a bathtub rim for suspending the tub above the floor, means securing the hanger to an upright, a clamp element for engagement with the top edge of the tub and cooperating with said laterally projecting portion to clamp the tub rim therebetween, means for adjustably securing the clamp member to said hanger, and a fastening element passing through said clamp member and the body of the hook shaped portion beyond the edge of the tub rim.

3. A device of the character described embodying a hanger member having a laterally projecting supporting portion upon which the rim of a bathtub rests whereby the tub will be suspended thereby independently of the floor, means securing the hanger member to an upright, a clamp member connected with the hanger member and engaging over the top of said rim and co-operating with the laterally projecting portion to hold the rim therebetween, and means engaging said clamp member and said laterally projecting portion of the hanger for drawing them into clamping relation.

4. A device of the character described embodying a hanger member having a laterally projecting supporting portion upon which the rim of a bathtub rests whereby the tub will be suspended thereby independently of the floor, means securing the hanger member to an upright, a clamp member connected with the hanger member and having a laterally projecting portion engaging over the top of said rim and co-operating with the first said laterally projecting portion to hold the rim therebetween, means engaging said clamp member and said laterally projecting portion of the hanger for drawing them into clamping relation, and sealing material between the outer edge of the tub and the adjacent parts of the clamp and hanger member.

5. A bathtub support embodying a hanger member provided with a laterally projecting portion to engage under the rim of a bathtub to suspend the tub with respect to a floor, means securing the hanger to an upright, a clamp member connected with the hanger and engaging over the edge of the tub and co-operating with said laterally projecting portion to hold the tub rim therebetween, and an adjusting screw threaded through said laterally projecting portion beneath said rim and engaging the lower face of the rim.

6. A bathtub support embodying a hanger member provided with a laterally projecting portion to engage under the rim of a bathtub to suspend the tub with respect to a floor, means securing the hanger to an upright, a clamp member connected with the hanger and engaging over the edge of the tub and co-operating with said laterally projecting portion to hold the tub rim therebetween, means adjustably securing the clamp member with the hanger, a fastening bolt passing through the clamp member and the body of the laterally projecting portion of the hanger, and an element adjustably connected with said laterally projecting portion beneath said rim and engaging the lower face of the rim.

7. A tub holding bracket comprising a wall engaging element having an outwardly projecting flange to engage under the tub rim, a flange clamp slidably mounted adjacent the face of said element and having an outwardly projecting flange to engage over and rest upon the top of the tub rim, and means for securing the clampin adjusted position, said means embodying a fastening device passing through an elongated opening in the clamp and also through the said wall engaging element and into the supporting wall.

8. A tub holding bracket comprising a wall engaging element having an outwardly projecting flange to engage under the tub rim, a flange clamp slidably mounted adjacent the face of said element and having an outwardly projecting flange to engage over and rest upon the top of the tub rim, means for securing the clamp in adjusted position, said means embodying a fastening device passing through an elongated opening in the said clamp and engaging the said element, and additional means engaging the said element and the clamp beyond the edge of the tub for drawing said element and clamp against the rim of the tub.
