Description

April 16, 1935. s. STEPANIAN GARMENT Filed April 7, 1933 Inventor J'Zepeka J'Zepaza/H/ attorneys Patented Apr. 16, 1935 Stephen Stepanian, Columbus. Ohio, assignmof one-half to John H. Pumphrey, Columbus,
Ohio
Application April 7, 1933, Serial No. 664,975
2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garments and more particularly to shirts or other similar garments which, in all positions of the wearer and under all conditions, will be prevented from working upwardly above the waist line of the wearer and when worn in connection with trousers will prevent the tail of the shirt from working upwardly out of the trousers.
The shirt is equally as well adapted for business or dress wear as for all kinds of sport wear, but it will be readily understood that the tendency of the shirt to work upwardly out of the trousers is aggravated when the wearer is wearing the shirt while taking part in sport activities.
The primary object of'the invention is therefore the provision of a shirt embodying the novel and improved means for preventing the shirt from working upwardly out of the trousers of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the provision of what I have termed a crotchett of a novel and improved construction. v
Other specific objects and improvements of the invention will appear in more detail in the following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a front view of the tails of a shirt having thereto applied my improved crotchett;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary detailed vertical sectional view through the front and tail ends of a shirt having associated therewith my improved crotchett; and
Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view showing the manner of attachment of my improved crotchett to the tails of a shirt.
As is well known, the lower ends or tails of a shirt or other similar garments will pull and work upwardly and outwardly. from the belt bands of the trousers of a wearer, and it is to overcome this objectionable feature that the present invention has been conceived.
Referring to the drawing which illustrates the application of my improved invention to a shirt, A illustrates the improved crotchett which is of substantially wedge shape and comprises a piece of pliable material, which is preferably the same material of which the shirt is composed, although it need not necessarily be so. I
The front end of the shirt is designated as I,
v and the rear end or shirt tail is designated at 2.
The rear end or shirt tail 2 at a point above its lower end, so that it will be above the sitting area of the body, is provided with a transversely arranged strip 3 preferably sewed to the shirt tail along the upper edge of the strip and down the ends as indicated at I. This strip is provided adjacent its ends with button holes 5 and intermediate its length with a button hole 8. The shirt could be made without this strip as the button holes could be put directly on the shirt tail.
The crotchett is substantially wedge shaped and the long straight edge or end I is provided with buttons 8 by means of which the crotchett is detachably secured to the strip 3 or to the shirt. The opposite reduced end 9 of the crotchett is provided with spaced vertically aligned button holes I and I I. An extension tab or strip I2 having vertically aligned spaced button holes I3 and I4 is suitably secured as at I5 to the reduced end '9 of the crotchett.
This construction provides at the reduced end of the crotchett four button holes in spaced vertical alignment, any one or more of which can be secured to any one or more of the three buttons I5, I6 and II, which gives to the crotchett an adjustability to meet the requirements of the particular physique of the wearer.
It is to be understood that the narrow end of the crotchett passes between the legs of the wearer and that the narrow end of the crotchett is secured in the desired adjusted position by one or more of the buttons I 5, I8 and II on the lower front end I of the shirt. These spaced button holes III, II, I3 and I 4 provide the crotchett with an adjustability of approximately six inches. By properly adjusting the crotchett, it will give ample freedom of motionor movement to the wearer of the shirt in any position he may assume. The crotchett is so designed that it is not bulky nor uncomfortable and in hot weather or any other time, the crotchett can be utilized in the place of short undergarments or trunks.
By reason of the long edge I of the crotchett which is secured to the rear tail 2 of the shirt, the back of the shirt is held downwardly with an even stress across the major portion of the shirt back and will preventthe shirt back from working upward under any and all conditions.
By attaching the wide end of the crotchett in the manner illustrated and described, the piece is practically completely hidden from sight so that the shirt has a conventional shirt appearance. It is further to be noted that the crotchett is so attached to the shirt tail ends that it may be easily and quickly detached and discarded if it is not the desire of the wearer to utilize it.
Under certain conditions it may be desirable to make the extension tab I2 0! an elastic material whereby resiliency or give is built into the crotchett piece.
While I have shown in the preferred embodiment of my invention a crotchett attached in a certain manner, the narrow end of the crotchett may be attached to the front ends of the shirt by eliminating the button holes III, H, H, and M at the narrow end of the crotchett and by providing one button at the extreme narrow end of the crotchett and another button at the end of the tab (either elastic or non-elastic) and instead of having buttons l5, l6 and I! on the inner lower end of the shirt, this could be made all button holes on both inner and outer edges of the shirt at the same spacing as buttons IS, IS, and I1, thereby either of the buttons which is attached at the narrow end of the crotchett may be adjustably buttoned to the lower end of the shirt.
I am aware that the narrow end of the crotchett may be attached to the front ends of the shirt by eliminating the button holes marked In, H, H and I l at the narrow end of the crotchett and by providing one button at the extreme narrow end of the crotchett and another button at the end of the tab (either elastic or non-elastic) and instead of having buttons l5, l6 and IT on the inner lower end of the shirt, a strip could be sewed vertically on the back side of the inner edge of the shirt exactly back of where buttons l5, l8 and I! were placed, this strip being provided with a plurality of button holes vertically arranged with same spacings as buttons I 5, I6 and II. This strip is sewed on three edges to back side of inner edge of shirt in such a manner as it will resemble the conventional front fly of trousers. Thus the one or may be both of the buttons which are attached at the narrow end of the crotchett may be adjustably buttoned to this fly which is provided with button holes and sewed vertically on the back side of the inner edge of the shirt. At extreme lower front ends of the shirt could be provided a button and a button hole to keep the front ends of the shirt together.
What I claim is:
1. In a shirt, a substantially wedge shaped crotchett adapted to pass between the legs of the wearer, a horizontally arranged strip provided with button holes positioned adjacent the lower end of the shirt tail and secured to the inner side thereof, the wide end of the crochett provided with a plurality of buttons adapted for detachable connection with the button holes of said strip with the faces of the buttons engaging the inner faces of the shirt to protect said buttons, an extension tab at the narrow end of said crotchett, a plurality of spaced vertically aligned button holes in the narrow end of said crotchett and said crotchett extension tab, and a plurality of spaced vertically aligned buttons on the outer face of the front end of said shirt adapted to detachably receive one or more of the button holes in the narrow end of the crochett or the crotchett extension tab, for the purpose described.
2. In a shirt, a substantially wedge shaped crotchett adapted to pass between the legs of the wearer, a horizontally arranged strip provided with button holes positioned adjacent the lower end of the shirt tail and secured to the inner side thereof, the wide end of the crotchett provided with a plurality of buttons adapted for detachable connection with the button holes of said strip, an elastic extension tab at the narrow end of the said crotchett, a plurality of spaced, vertically aligned button holes in the narrow end of the said crotchett and said crotchett extension tab, and a plurality of spaced vertically aligned buttons on the outer face of the front end of said shirt adapted to detachably receive one or more of the button holes in the narrow end of the crotchett or crotchett extension tab, for the purpose described.
