When the arm is oscillated in the opposite direction, the clutch is released from the impeller which remains stationary while the clutch is returned for a new gripping hold on the impeller i0. There is a similar clutch 35 with rollers and springs located within the impeller 9. The shaft 36 carrying this clutch is xed to the end vmembers of the casing by nuts 31 and 38 which serve the-double function of pre. venting the shaft from rotating, and tightly joining the end sections of the casing to the central section thereof From the above it will be apparent that the impellers are mounted for intermittent rotation in the casing and have a bearing contact with the curved faces of thecasing. By adjusting the stud 26 the extent vof movement of the clutch block drivingthe pump canbe vvaried and this will vary the inter- The side members of the casing are provided with openings therethrough which are in alinement. A cap nut 40 may be threaded into one of these openings for closing the same, and a pipe #Si attached to the other by a suitable coupling. This pipe may serve as an intake pipe for the pump, in which case the uid will be drawn into the pump at the lower section of the casing which is divided by the impellers into an intake section and a discharge section. The side members of the casing lare also provided with openings, one of which may be closed by cap nut 42 and the pipe 43 attached to the other by a suitable coupling which willserve as a discharge pipe for the discharge side of the pump. These cap nuts 42 are interchanged with the pipes and the upper pipe may be made an intake pipe and the lower one a discharge pipe if the pump is rotated in the opposite direction. The two shafts on which the clutch devices a'nd gears are supported may be turned end for end in the casing, and this will reverse the direction of rotation of' the impellers. The operating elements of the pump can be shifted, making the other impeller a driving impeller, or so as to place the operating arm on the other side of the pump. -This greatly facilitates the installing of the pump with minor changes in the machine with which it is associated. The
pump is simple in construction, consisting of few parts, and even when operated at highl speeds the parts are subject to little wear.
The pump is especially adapted for the supplying of oil to a high speed machine such as a sewing machine wherein the prime moving shaft may be rotating from 4,000 to 5,000 R. P. M.. One of the problems in a high speed'machine is to reduce the supply of'a pump 'to the requirements of the machine. The pump which has just been described Amay be driven at high speed and the amount of oil delivered reduced to a very small amount, due to the fact that for each rotation of the prime mover a very small movement may be given to the impellers. Furthermore, the exequally as well for other purposes where the amount of fluid transmitted is relatively small and theconditions are such that the prime mover operating the pump is a high speed part.
it is obvious that other forms of intermittently rotating impellers may be used than those described in detail and that the clutches may be otherwise placed relative to the impellers and the casing, andfminor changes made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Y Having thus described the invention, what ilv claim las new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
