Massachusetts Application December 22, 1910, Serial No. 111,111 scum. (01. 103-150) This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly, but not exclusively, has reference to improvements in a mine gathering pump of the multi-chamber, diaphragm type.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved pump of the multi-chamber, diaphragm type. Another objectis to provide an improved pump wherein. motor actuated diaphragms are employed for creating a suction in the'chambers of the pump and for forcing the fluid from the pump chambers. Still another object is to provide an improved pump of' the above named type that will be simple in construction, tending to reduce the number of parts,and reliable in operation. Still a further object is to provide an improved pump especially adapted for mine use, of low height, with simple and somewhat protected piping, providing substantially continuous discharge of fluid, and smooth-running. Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention. will be apparent from the following description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred embodiment of, one formof the invention is clearly shown.

In this illustrative embodiment of the invention there is shown a multi-chamber, diaphragm pump of the mine gathering type comprising a base I adapted to rest upon any suitable support or directly upon the mine bottom, and a pedestal frame 2 providing a gear casing supported on the base and in turn'supporting from one wall thereof a horizontal motor 3. The motor power shaft 4 is suitably journaled at its opposite ends-- at one end within a bearing 5 supported within the gear casing, while a reduced end thereof projects beyond said bearing within the gear casing and is splined by a coupling 6 to an alined transmission shaft 1. The shaft 1 is suitably journaled within bearings 8 and 9 supported within the gear casing and has formed thereon intermediate its ends and between the bearings, a worm mesh- This worm wheel is the gear casing, herein above shaft 1, and suitably journaled in said casing within bearings l3, l3 preferably arranged within detachable bearing supports l4, l4 secured by screws I 5 to the pedestal frame 2. The gear casing contains an oil bath in which the worm gears run, and the splashing of lubricant by the worm gears will lubricate the bearings l3, I3. Suitable packings l6, l6 surrounding the ends of the shaft preclude any leakage of lubricant from the gear casing past the bearings l3. In this illustrative construction, the ends of the'shaft |2 are formed with eccentrically disposed crank pins II, II,
herein arranged with respect to each other on the shaft 180 apart. Supported by the pins II are bearings II! on which are mounted the hubs I9 of plunger-like members 20, each of which members has a circular bottom portion 2|. As shown, the crank pins l1 and plunger-like members 20 are arranged exteriorly of the gear casing at the opposite sides of the latter.
The base has formed therein parallel pump chambers 22, 22, one on each side of the base, and flexible annular diaphragms 23 are clamped at their outer peripheries to the base around the tops of the pump chambers, and at their inner peripheries to the bottom portions 2| of the plunger-like members. Each diaphragm is clamped at its outer periphery between a flange 24 formed integral with the base and a clamping ring 25 secured to the base flange by screws 26. The diaphragms are clamped near their inner peripheries between the ,circular portion 2| on the actuating member 20 and a clamping ring 21 secured to the member 2| by screws 28. Itwill thus be seen that the diaphragms provide partially flexible upper walls for the pump chambers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an intake pipe 30.is connected through branched pipe connections 3| and 32 to the intake ports of the pump chambers, and the pump chamber discharge ports are connected through branched pipes 33 and 34 to a discharge pipe 35. The pipes 3| and 32 contain conventional intake check valves 36, 36, while the discharge pipes 33, 34 are provided with conventional discharge check valves 31, 31. The base is suitably stiffened and made stronger by ribs 38 extending between the pump chambers, and ribs 39, traversed by suitable flow-openings 40,
extend transversely of the pump chambers, these latter ribs being so reduced in height at their tops that they are not contacted either by diaphragmsor plunger-like member bottoms.
The operation of the improved pump' is as follows: When the motor 3 is operated, thur rotating the motor shaft I, the worm-" will drive, the worm wheel H and transverse-shaft lL Rotation of the shaft [2 will effect actuation of the crank pins i1, ll, which will reciprocate and slightly oscillate the plunger-like members 20. As these will be created inthe pump chambers whereby,
fluid will flow from the source of supply through inlet pipe 30 and branched pipes 3| and 32 past the intake valves 36 into the pump chambers, during which time the discharge valves 31- are automatically closed. On the downward strokes of the plunger-like members, the pressure within the pump chambers will open the discharge valves 31, and the intake valves 36 will be automatically closed. The fluid flowing through the discharge valves will pass through the discharge pipes 33, 34 and the discharge pipe 35, which may be connected to deliver at any desired point. The pumping operation will continue as long as the motor 3 is operated and material to be pumped is available. The gearing within the gear casing will be sufficiently lubricated, inasmuch as the worm and worm wheel are running continuously in oil, and the splashing of lubricant by the worm gearing will lubricate the shaft bearings [3. The plunger-like members of the pump for actuating the diaphragms flex the latter upwardly and downwardly in alternation, so that when one pump chamber is receiving fluid through the intake pipe, the other chamber is discharging fluid through the discharge pipe.
As a result of this invention, it will be noted that an improved mine gathering pump of the diaphragm type is provided which is extremely simple and rugged in design, well adapted to meet the severe demands of service. It will fur- While there is in this application specifically,

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pump comprising, in combination, a base on the bottom of which the pump is adapted to be supported and having a pump chamber formed therein, a motor supported by said base with its bottom disposed above the bottom of said base and having its power shaft horizontally disposed in horizontal planes above said pump chamber, a flexible diaphragm in said chamber for creating a suction in-said chamber and for forcing the fluid from said chamber, driving connections between said motor power shaft and said diaphragm for flexing the latter; and inlet and discharge pipe connections extending along the sides ofthe base in horizontal planes near the bottom of the motor and in horizontal planes in adjacency to and above the bottom of said base, said pipe connections communicating with-said pump chamber and certain of said pipe connections extending along a side and transversely of one end of the motor 2. 3. A pump comprising, in combination, a base frame providing parallel vertical pump chambers and having a closed bottom wall which provides the bottoms for said chambers and on which the pump is adapted to be supported, said chambers opening upwardly through the top of the base frame, diaphragms providing flexible top walls for said pump chambers, a pedestal frame mounted on the top of said base frame between said pump chambers and projecting upwardly from the top of said base frame, said pedestal frame providing a gear housing, a motor supported by said pedestal frame and overhanging said base frame with its bottom surface disposed above the bottom of said base frame, gearing in said gear housing and driven by said motor, a horizontal shaft journaled on said pedestal frame and extending transversely over the top of said base frame, said shaft driven by said gearing, means arranged exteriorly of said pedestal frame and driven by said transverse shaft for flexing said diaphragms to effect intake of fluid into and discharge of fluid from said pump chambers, and supply and discharge passage means for said chambers and arranged above the bottom of said base frame. v
4. A pump comprising, in combination, a base frame providing parallel vertical pump chambers andh'aving a close'd'bottom wall which provides the bottoms for said chambers and on which the pump is adapted to be'supported, said chambers for said pump chambers, apedestal frame mount-- ed on the top of said base frame between said pump chambers and projecting upwardly from the top of said base frame, said pedestal frame providing a gear housing, a motor supported by said pedestal frame and overhanging said base frame with its bottom surface disposed above the bottom of said base frame, gearing in said gear housing and driven by said motor, a horizontal shaft journaled on said pedestal frame and extending. transversely over the top of said base frame, said shaft driven by said gearing, means arranged exteriorly of said pedestal frame and driven by said transverse shaft for flexing said diaphragms to effect intake of fluid into and discharge of fluid from said pump chambers, said the bottoms for said chambers and on which the.

6. A pump comprising, in combination, a base on the bottom of which the pump is adapted to be supported and having pump chambers formed therein, a motor supported by said base with its bottom disposed above the bottom of said base and having its power shafthorizontally disposed in horizontal planes above said pump chambers, flexible diaphragms in said chambers for creating a suction in said chambers and for forcing fluid from said chambers, driving connections between said motor power shaft and said diaphragms for flexing the latter, and inlet and discharge connections extending along the sides and transversely of said base in common 'horizontal planes above the bottom of said base and near the bottom of said motor, said connections communicating with said pump chambers, and certain of said pipe connections extending along the sides and across one end of said motor.

A pump comprising, in combination, a low compact base frame providingparallel vertical pump chambers and having a bottom wall which provides the bottoms for said chambers and on which the pump is adapted to be supported, said chambers opening upwardly through the top of the base frame, diaphragms providing flexible top walls for said pump chambers, a pedestal frame mounted on top of said base frame between said pump chambers and projecting upwardly from the top of said base frame, said pedestal frame providing a gear housing, a motor supported solely by said pedestal frame in overhanging relation to said base frame, the bottom surface of said motor disposed above the bottom of said base frame, gearing in said gear housing and driven by said motor, means arranged exterio'rly of said pedestal frame and driven by said gearing for flexing said diaphragms to effect intake of fluid into and discharge of fluid from said pump chambers, and supply and discharge passage means for said chambers and arranged above the bottom of said base frame.
8. A pump comprising, in combination, a base frame providing parallel vertical pump chambers and having a closed bottom wall which provides the bottoms for said chambers and on which the pump is adapted to be supported, the chamber bottoms spaced by a recess, said frame'having vertical webs extending across said chambers below the tops thereof and across said recess for reenforcing said base frame, said vertical webs extending across said chambers formed with flow passages, diaphragms providing flexible top walls for said pump chambers, a gear housing supported on said base frame and containing intermeshing gearing, a motor for driving said gearing and arranged above the bottom of said base frame, intake and discharge passage means communicating with said chambers and arranged above the bottom of said base frame. and means driven by said gearing for flexing said diaphragms to effect intake of fluid into and discharge of fluid from said pump chambers.
