I have discovered that sheets can be delivered from a rotary printing press at a higher speed by the use of side grippers rather than frontv grippers but that. front'g'rippers are more micient in taking the sheets from the rotary sheet carrier, as, for instance, the impression cylinder. Therefore, the object of my invention, generally, is to provide a sheet delivery comprising coacting front and side grippers, the front grippers being caused to take the'sheets from the rotary sheet carrier and thereafter release the sheets to the side grippers-and the side grippers being caused to take the sheets from the front grippers I and thereafter release the sheets at the delivery point.
a The object of my invention, more particularly, is'to provide a sheet delivery of theabove character in which the side grippers are adjustable, for handling sheets of different widths.
My invention, more particularly, comprises an endless delivery carrier havingside chains for mounting the front and oppositely disposedside grippers in sets along the same, the said sets of front and side grippers being properly positioned along the endless carrier, for taking the sheets from the rotary sheet carrier andjthe oppositely disposed side grippers of each set being, adjustable toward and away from each other, forhandling sheets of different widths. H t
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents in end'elevation so much of a rotary printing press as includes my improved sheet delivery; 7 r
Fig. 2 represents a sectiontaken in the plane of the line I I--II of Fig; 1, looking in the direction of thearrows; three sets of front and side grippers beingshown on the endless delivery carrier; g r

The impression cylinder 1 which acts as a rotary sheet carrier is provided in the present instance with two diametrically opposed head grippers 2 operated by a suitable cam 4 to take the sheetsat one point from asheet feeding cylinder 3 andto release the sheets at another point tomyimproved sheet delivery. j
This sheet delivery is shown as comprising an endless carrier having two horizontally disposed.
sidech'ains 5 traveling in parallel endless paths aroundthe usual sprocket wheels 6. V
Front and side grippers are carried by the side chains! ofthe endless 'deliveryfcarrier, said,
grippers being 'arranged in sets comprising two opposed side grippers and their coactin'g'jfront gripper. Each'set of these front and side grippers is constructed, arranged and operated as follows: A fixed crossbar I and a rocking crossbar 8 are mounted at their ends in dividedbrackets'carried by the side chains 5. 'Each divided bracket comprises anupper member 9 and arlower member-v lil. Two'pins l2 are clamped at their innerends between'the upper and lower'members Sandlll of the divided'clamp by a suitablescrewbolt II, which pins l2 project through the pivot holes'of one of the links of the side chain 5 and are there fastened by removable cotter pins l3. i f.
The front grippers of a set comprise stationary jaws l4 fast on the fixed crossbar l and coacting movable jaws l 5 fast on the rockingcrossbar 8. t Each' of the pair of oppositely'disposed side grippers of a set comprises coacting' stationary and movable jaws l6 and I! carried by ,a divided collar comprising twohalf members l8 ;and l9 clampedtogether around the fixed crossbar! by suitable screw bolts 20. The fixed jaw' I Bforms an integral part of the half member: [8 of the divided collarand it is provided withza'studil on which the hub 22 of-the 'movablefjawh l! is pivoted. This hub 22 is also provided with a toothed segment 23 anda spring engaged arm ,2 4. An overthrow spring 25 is located between the outerend of the arm 24 and the outer end ofan arm 26 projecting from the stationary jaw 16. This spring 25 is so arranged that itwill' yieldingly hold the movable jaw I! in open or closed, positions.
' A studZ'l projecting from the half member l8,
28 of a rock lever, one arm 29 of which carries a cam controlled stud or'roller 30 and the'other arm 3| of which carries a toothed segment 32 meshing with the toothed segment 23 of the movable jaw IT. A lug33 servesas a stop for limiting the opening movement of the movable jaw ll.
The means for controlling the operation ofthe front grippers of a set is as follows: 7 V
A .cam 34 islocated in position tovengage a stud or roller 35 carried by an arm 36 fast on the rocking bar 8 to cause the jaws 14, I5 of the;
front grippers to take a sheet from thegrippers 2 of the impression cylinder I as each set of front and side grippers on the endless delivery carrier reach the proper point of transfer from the impression cylinder. Another cam 3-1 is located in position to cause the front grippers torelease the leading ends of the-sheets after the sheets have'been taken by the jaws l6, opposed side grippers of the set. a V The means for controlling the operation of the sidegrippers of the set is as follows:
Two cams 38 are" located in position to cause the opposed side grippers of a set to take the sheets from .the' front grippers of their set and n t the to release the sheets as they reach the delivery point, i. e., a position over'the delivery pile '39. These cams 38 are adjustably secured along the frame crossbars 43 as'by set screws 4|.
The opposed side grippers of each set may be adjusted laterallyof the endless delivery carrier toward and away from each other, for handling sheets of different widths. This is done by moving the stationary and movable jaws l4 and I5 of the front grippers' along their fixed and rockingbars 1 and 8 respectively, the gripper jaws being secured in their adjusted positions as by the set screws 42 and 43' respectively.
It will be understood that the cams 38 on the crossbars 40 must be adjusted laterally of'the endless carrier along the crossbars, to bring them a into their, operative position with respect to their respective side grippers.
' In operation: The front grippers of each set are operated at the proper point to take a sheet from its grippers on the rotarysheet carrier. As the sheet. travels toward. its delivery point the front grippers are released from the sheet after the side grippers of the set have grasped the sheet. These side grippersin turn are then operated to release the sheet as it reaches its delivery point. I V I From the above description it will be seen that I have provided simple and efficient means for delivering sheets rapidly from a rotarysheet carrier, such, for instance, as the impression cyl-;
inder of a rotary sheet feed printing press," said delivery means including coacting front and, side grippers. H M I I It is-evident that variousxchanges may be re-,
' sorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein ,shownand described, but What I claim is:
