Description

4 W. P. COOK.. Stove-Pipe Adjuster..
Patented .|an.l 29, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE,
WILLIAM I. COOK, OF NEW GARDEN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE ADJUSTERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,618, dated January 29, 1878 application led January 8, 187B.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. Cook, of New Garden, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Adjusters 5 and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings which accompany this specification, forming a part of the same, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of an ordinary joint of stove-pipe with the adjusting apparatus attached, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sec` tional view.
My invention relates to that class of devices intended to hold that portion of the pipe of an ordinary stove which is introduced into the chimney or flue rigidly in its place, and constructed so as to be easilyadjustable to any thickness of wall or to any depth of iue.
It consists in the use of a sliding bar and hook, Working independently of each other, and both capable of being held in any desired position by means of a set-screw, working in a lug or ear suitably attached to the outer surface of the pipe.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my said improvement, I will now proceed to describe the same.
In Fig. 1,Ais an ordinary joint of stovepipe. B is an adjustable slide-bar. D is a rod, which is also adjustable. Both the bar and rod have a movement parallel with the longitude of the pipe. O is a lug or bracket, secured to the pipe in a suitable manner, provided with a setlscrew, E, which, when turned down on the slide-bar B and rod D, serves to hold them in position, as required. The motion of the slide-bar B is shown in the dotted lines B.
The rod D, in addition to its iongauuinai is a hook at right angles with the main part of the rod, is-turned at will, so as to secure it to or release it from contact with the inside sur face of the ue, as shown at d d d, Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows: When the pipe A is inserted in the chimney-line, the slide-bar B is fastened at a distance from the end of the pipe sufficient to keep it a proper space from the rear wall of the iiue, while the rod D is turned when at its proper position, so as to catch on the inner surface of the flue. The bar and rod are secured in position by the set-screw, thus holding the pipe firmly in position without other aid.
It will be seen that by the use of this device, which is cheap and durable, the stove will never have its draft impaired or become liable to smoke from the pipe entering the tlue so as to press on the rear wall, while it does away with the danger of fire or other accident from the pipe falling out.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slide-bar B, rod D, bracket G, and setscrew E, in combination with the pipe A, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
WILLIAM P.f COOK.
