CIGARETTE HOLDER AND BLANK THEREFOR Filed July 17, 1954 /f 4 M 3mm Patented Mar. 26, 1935 UNITED STATES CIGARETTE, HOLDER AND BLANK THEREFOR Alpha S. Penrose, Wabuska, Nev. Application July 17, 1934, Serial No. 735,668
2 Claims.
This invention relates to cigarette holders which are formed of paper, Cellophane .or like material and particularly to a blank from which a cigarette holder may be rolled, the blank being so formed as to permit the holder to be readily rolled and have inserted therein a wad of cotton or like material for the purpose of filtering the smoke and preventing nicotine from entering the mouth of the smoker.
A further object is to provide a cigarette holder which is very simple, which is relatively rigid, and which may be cheaply made.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette holder constructed in accordance with my inve.n tion.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the holder partly rolled up.
Fig. 3 is 'a view of the filler.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is made.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that my cigarette holder is constituted by a roll of paper, Cellophane or like material, the paper holder A being tapered from one end to the other and being, of course, open at both ends, there being a wad of cotton or other filtering material designated B disposed within the holder adjacent the large end thereof. I
The holder A is formed of the blank 10 shown in Figure 4. This blank may have any suitable dimensions depending upon the length of the holder and as an example of these dimensions, it may be stated that the blank shown in Figure 4 may have a length of six inches and a width of four inches and that for smaller blanks, smaller proportions will be used, the proportion "of the width relative to the length being approximately four to six.
One longitudinal edge 11 of this. blank is straight from end to end. One end edge 12 of the blank is at right angles to the longitudinal edge 11. The edge 13 of the blank is curved longitudinally and laterally from its junction with the edge 12 to the junction with the end 13 The small end of the blank adjacent the intersection oi the edge 11 with the edge 13* is-coated upon one face with adhesive 14, as, for instance, mucilage or in the case of Cellophane or like materials, an adhesive which is capable of connecting two layers of Cellophane to each other. In order to form the blank into a cigarette holder,
the blank is laid out flat and then gradually rolled, the roll beginning at the end 12 and particularly at the corner formed by the intersection of the end 12 with the longitudinal edge 11. As the blank is rolled and because of the shape of the blank, the tube formed by rolling the paper and starting at the corner 15 'will be formed into a tapered tube, the curved edge 13 constituting the relatively large mouth of the tube. The blank will be rolled around a corner 15 generally speaking as around a pivot, the corner 15 forming the general center around which rolling occurs. When the blank has been nearly rolled up, moisture will be applied to the adhesive 14 and this outer corner of the rolled tube wfll be pasted down against the body of the tube itself.
The tube thus formed will have a wall constituted of a single sheet of fabric rolled upon itself to provide a. large number as, for instance, approximately ten layers of thin paper for a portion of the length of the tube. This makes the tube particularly rigid so that it .will readily support a cigarette without bending or sagging. After the tube is formed, the filler B will then be inserted within the tube. This filler is inserted so that it is relatively adjacent the large mouth of the tube or holder.
The particular shape and method of forming this holder are such as to give the body of the holder firmness and stiffness. Other holders of paper and known to me require to be treated with parafiin or to have acork mouthpiece in order to give firmness to the body so that it shall not sag or collapse. v
The shape of the blank is such that when the holder is rolled, the end of the holder will be at right angles to the axis and there will be no loose edges which will prevent the cigarette from fitting nicely in the end of the holder. By using a relatively large filler adjacent the large end of the holder, it is prevented from being drawn through the small end of the holder into the mouth and furthermore at this end, the filler or filter is not too tightly packed to prevent the free passage of smoke.
The blanks may be readily packed and sold as blanks from which cigarette holders may be made by anyone who desires a holder. In that case,
any desired filler may be inserted by the person making up the holders or holders may be manufactured and sold already rolled up. The holders may be made of paper parchment, Cellophane, or other materials of like character, though I prefer to use vegetable parchment tor the purpose.
I claim:
1. A blank for making cigarette holders consisting of a sheet 01 flexible fibrous material longer than it is wide, the sheet having one straight, iongitudinal edge and one end edge at right angles to the longitudinal edge, the opposite edge of the sheet being curved convexly from the extremity of the end edge to the opposite extremity oi the longitudinal edge, the corner oi the blank adjacent the junction of the curved and longitudinal edges being covered with an adhesive.
2. A blank for making cigarette holders consisting of a sheet of flexible fibrous material longer than it is wide, the sheet having one straight longitudinal edge and an end edge at right angles to the longitudinal edge, the opposite longitudinal edge of the sheet being curved convexly from the extremity of the last named end edge nearly to the opposite extremity oi the blank and then being extended toward the straight longitudinal edge at right angles thereto, the corner oi the blank at the last named end of the blank having 10 adhesive applied thereto.
