earner oFF-ICE 3 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a bag or sack holder of irnproved construction. A
Second, to provide a hopper having a cylindrical mouth provided with keepers or jaws at the rear and hooks at the front for engaging the rim of the sack with a surplus portion at the front forming a vent opening for the exit of air displaced by the material put in the sack by way of the hopper.
Third, to provide improved means for adjusting the vertical position of the hopper relative to the platform.
Fourth, to provide a hopper having a conical funnel and an arcuate rear wail at the top thereof for facilitating the shoveling of material into the hopper and preventing the spilling of such material at the rear thereof.
Fifth, to provide improved means for connecting a hopper of this type in assembled relation With the upper end of a tubular slide.
Sixth, to provide a bag or a sack holder having the above desirable features and characteristics and which is simple and economical in its parts and efficient in operation.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention Will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a View in side elevation of a sack or bag holder embodying the features of my invention, portions of the standard and slide being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of one of the rear keepers.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, numeral 1 indicates a platform provided with a tubular standard 2 secured in place by the foot piece 3. A tubular upright 4 is telescoped in the upper end of the standard for vertical adjustment and has a series of Wall openings 5 for selective individual registry with the Wall opening 6 in the standard.
The bracket 7 is in the form of a strap loop engaging the standard, the loop terminating in spaced parallel arms 8, 8. By means of the bolt 9 the lever 10 is pivoted between the arms, the
lever having a nger piece 11 at one end and a pin 12 at the other end for coaction with the upright and standard wall openings to hold the upright in adjusted Vertical position. A spring 13 acts to urge the lever and pin to engaged position. L
The upright extension member 14 is driven into the upper end of the tubular upright 4 to form a substantially permanent or iXed fit between the extension member and the upright. The hopper 15 has an arcuate rear wall 16 disposed against the upright extension member, a conical funnel or upwardly flaringwall portion 17, and a cylindrical neck 18. The upper edges of the rear wall and funnel of the hopper are merged and rolled outwardly to form a continuous bead 19.
The upper end of the extension member 14 and the rear wall 16 of the hopper are secured together by means of the upper bracket 20 in the for-m of a strap loop engaging the extension member and terminating in out-turned arms 21, 21 secured to the rear wall as by the rivets 22, 22. The lower bracket 23 has a loop 24 embracing the extension member and resting on the top of the slide 4, the loop merging into arms forming a shank 25 and terminating in out-turned ends 26, 26 secured to the funnel 17 of the hopper as by rivets 27.
The cylindrical neck 18 of the hopper is provided with a pair of rear keepers or jaws 28, 28 and a pair of front hooks 29, 29. The keepers or jaws 28 are secured to the rear of the cylindrical neck as by rivets 30, 30 and each keeper has a series of upturned teeth 31 for engaging the rim 32 of the bag or sack 33 at the rear. The hooks are secured to the front of the cylindrical neck as by rivets 34, 34 and are adapted to engage the rim of the sack at its sides with the-'surplus material 35 at the front of the rim forming a vent opening 36 for the exit of the air displaced by the material put in the sack by Way of the hopper.
In-the operation of my sack or bag holder, the mouth of the bag or sack is telescoped over the cylindrical neck of the hopper and the rim of the sack at the rear is engaged with the hooks 31 by pulling the rim of the sack forwardly. At the same time the sides of the rim are engaged with the hooks 29 with the surplus material at the front to form a vent opening for the purpose described above. The vertical positiony of the hopper relative to the platform is then adjusted by operating the lever 10 to cause the pin to release the slide which is then adjusted to the correct position for the length of the bag, Wherenearest opening in the slide and holds the same in properly adjusted position. The material is then shoveled into the hopper which directs it into the sack. In the shoveling operation, the rear Wall 16 of the hopper prevents the spilling of the material at the back of the funnel. After the desired quantity of material has been placed in the sack, the same is unhooked first from the front hooks 29 and then from the rear hooks 28, 28. It is thus seen that the arrangement of the rear keepers and front hooks provides for the easy connection and disconnection between the hopper and mouth of the bag.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A sack holder comprising in combination a platform provided with a tubular standard, a tubular upright telescoped in the upper end of said standard, an upright extension member Xedly fitting in the upper end of said upright, a hopper having an arcuate rear wall disposed against said member, a conical funnel and a cylindrical neck provided with sack engaging means, an upper bracket having a loop receiving said member and terminating in out-turned ends secured to the rear wall of said hopper, and a lower bracket having a loop embracing said member and resting on the top of said upright, the loop merging into arms forming a shank and terminating in out-turned ends secured to the funnel of said hopper.
2. A sack holder comprising in combination a tubular standard, an upright extension member tting in the upper endr of said standard, a hopper having an arcuate rear wall disposed against said member, a conical funnel and a cylindrical neck provided with sack engaging means, an upper bracket receiving said member and secured to the rear wall of said hopper, and a lower bracket having a loop embracing said member and resting on the top of said standard, the loop merging into arms forming a shank and terminating in out-turned ends secured to the funnel of said hopper.
3. A sack holder comprising in combination a tubular standard, an upright extension member fitting in the upper end of said standard, a hopper having an arcuate rear wall disposed against said member, an upper bracket receiving said member and secured to the rear wall of said hopper, and a lower bracket having a loop embracing said member and resting on the top of said standard, the loop merging into arms forming a shank and terminating in out-turned ends secured to said hopper.
