IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSOM-LIFTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,465, dated January 22, 1878; application filed July 23, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUSTUS H. R. PRALL, of Elmira, in the county of Ghemung and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Adjusting Transoms, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a frontview of my improved transom or sash adjuster; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on line a- :20, Fig. 1.

This invention is intended to handle the sash or transom over .doors or upper windows in public buildings, or the-ventilating-windows of cars, &c., in such a manner as to throw them open, and fasten or hold them firmly at any required place or angle. The transom or sash can be handled from the top, middle, or bottom of the sash, according as the sash is hinged at the bottom, center, or top; and the invention consists of a connecting-rod sliding in a hollow and slotted guide-tube, and operating, by a connecting pivot-arm, the fixed arm of the sash or transom, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a sash, transom, ventilator, or similar window,

which is either arranged above the door or on top of a car, or in public buildings, and operated so as to be set to any suitable angle of inclination by means of a slide-rod, O, which is guided at the upper end in a hollow cylinder or tube, B, and at the lower end in a guide band or staple, with set-screw O, by which the slide-rod may be rigidly secured.

The upper endof the slide-rod 0 projects through a slot, at of the guide-tube B, and is connected by a pivot-arm, D, with a rigid bracket-arm, D, of the sash or transom.

The guide-tube is arranged higher or lower toward the sash or transom, according as the same swings on hinges at the bottom, or on center pivots, or on top hinges. The lowering of the slide-rod opens the transom, and the raising of the rod closes the same, and provides thus a simple and effective device that may be applied for various purposes.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i The combination of a transom, sash, or ventilating window, having rigid bracket-arm D,

with a pivoted connecting arm, D, slotted guide-tube B, arranged sidewise of sash, and of an operating slide-rod, O, and set-screw O, to adjust sash at any position and angle, substantially as set forth.
