Description
. I. CLARK. Arbors for) Gardens.
No. 199,353. Patented Jan, 22,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISSAGHAR CLARK, OF TIPPEOANOE CITY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARBORS FOR GARDENS,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,353, dated January '22, 1878; application filed January 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISSACHAR CLARK, of Tippecanoe City, in the county of Miami, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arbors and Trellises for Gardens and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and .to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a summer-house or arbor formed of sections of metal pipe connected together by side couplings, rafter and brace couplings, and also a dome or crown-piece, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which the figure represents a side elevation of my invention.
The summer-house or arbor is formed of a series of uprights, each of which is made in sections A A, of metal piping, connected by screw joints or connections B B, and the various uprights connected by horizontal sections of tubing, B B, also screwed into the connections or couplings B B. These couplings are, according to the nature of the case, made either in T shape or in the form of a cross, and where other than right angles are made, one or more of the arms of the coupling will be made at a more or less obtuse angle, as may be required. For instance, where a polygonalshaped house or arbor is made, as shown in the drawing, the side arms a a of the couplings B B will be bent at the proper angle.
Then at the top of each upright a raftercoupling, C, is used to connect the rafter D with the upright. Each 'rafter is also made in two or more sections, connected by combined rafter and brace couplings E, for also connecting tubular braces G between the rafters.
The upper ends of the rafters D are all united in a dome or crown-piece, H, which is constructed, as shown, of a single piece, forming a central upright tube, b, for the insertion of the point I, and a series of inclined tubes, dd, arranged in cone form, and intowhich the upper sections of the rafters are screwed.
The various uprights are placed with their lower ends, in hollow metallic posts L L, secured firmly in the ground, and coal-tar is poured into said posts before the uprights are placed in them, which willprotect the same from corrosion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A summer-house or arbor formed of sections of metal pipe connected together by side couplings B, rafter and brace couplings O E, and the dome or crown-piece H, the several parts being constructed in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of January, 1878.
' I. CLARK.
