To ctZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J can A. WRIGHT, of Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of this improvement is a fencepost and means for supporting the same, adapted to the production of a cheap and durable fence that may be manufactured in interchangeable parts convenient for close packing and shipment to distant points, that may be conveniently taken up and removed from one place of erection to another, and that is specially suitable for prairie countries or other localities where fences are liable to damage or destruction by fire-as along the line of railroads-and also for general use. These results are attained by the devices illus trated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.

Figure l is a side elevation of a fence'post and support for the same embodying the features of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top view of one of the parts detached.

A is the fence-post, which may be either a rod or tube provided with transverse perforations for the reception of bolts having elbows, as shown at a a or bolts having hooks, as shown at a? a for the purpose of connecting and securing the relative positions of the courses of barbed wire intended to be applied in the formation of the fence. hen a hollow tube is used to form the post A, the upper end is to be closed by the insertion of a plug or cap, a, which may be made of wood or other suitable material, the object of the same being to protect the inside of the post,

as far as practicable, against exposure to and consequences of damp weather. 'When a hollow tube is used to form the post A, it may be provided on one side with recesses large enough for the passage of the hooks a of the bolts a more or less within the body of the tube, for the purpose of tightening the courses of the wire connecting the posts. The bolts a. a are made to clutch the courses of wire more or less firmly by means of the nuts a".

B is a sleeve provided with integral rectangular perforated extensions B, for the purpose of connecting the sleeve with inclined metal arms or braces D, having transverse plates E riveted or bolted to their lower ends, substantially as shown, for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The braces D are to be secured to the extensions B of the sleeve .13 by bolts or rivets, as may be desired.

0 is a set-screw arranged to operate in a correspondingly-threaded perforation of the sleeve B, and by being set against the post A rigidly connects the latter wit-h the base-support, and thus prevents it from settling independently of said support. Another object of the sleeve B and set-screw O is .to allow the post A to be lowered to a greater or less depth in the ground, according to the nature of the soil where the fence is erected, as may be required to secure the vertical position of the posts.

In the application of the improvement, a suitable opening is made in the ground for the reception of the braces D E, and the post A sunk to a greater or less depth, as shown, after which the dirt is packed firmly around the same, leaving the sleeve 13 and setscrcw 0 above the ground. (Represented by the dotted lines.) The plates E at the base of the braces D will prevent the settling of the supporting frame, and also secure the vertical position of the post A. When necessary to remove the fence, the set-screw C may be loosed and the post then readily disengaged from its connection, after which the baseframe may be removed; or both may be'removed together.

It is well understood that it is not, broadly, new to use a set-screw in connection with an adjustable collar, and also that adjustable fence-posts are not, broadly, new.

Having explained the construction and operation of my'improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The sleeve B, having set-screw G, and provided with rigidly-connected inclined arms 1), having transverse base-plates E, in combina tion with the fence-post, as set forth.
