Description
Patented Mar. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE MEANS FOR CLEANSING THE SKIN No. Drawing. Application sea 2a, 1933,
8 Claims.
As a rule treatment with soap and water is not suificient to remove, especially from the hands and the face, oily-and greasy impurities such as are caused for example by working on machines,
cleaning machine parts and similar work, and it is inadvisable to use solvents such as benzine and the like which dissolve fats and oils, as the use of such hydrocarbons removes the fat from the skin and thus damages the latter.
All kinds of means have been therefore tried for cleansing the skin with the assistance of oil, mixtures of soap and hydrocarbons and the like, and also glycerine additions have been used for the purpose of keeping the skin moist and 55 thus avoiding damage to it.
As it is further known, soap is the most harmless means for removing fat or oil. Also mixtures of soap and acetone or the like organic solvents have been used for cleansing.
There are however instances where water is unavailable, for example when working on motor cars where repairs have to be done on the road and no water can be obtained even from a considerable distance and where also no water can be drawn from the radiator or the motor car as the same may not be water-cooled. In such cases it is a question of using a cleansing means which dissolves oil and fat and which must, also contain highly volatile harmless substances which 30 quickly evaporate with the water of the soap solution and therefore make drying the hands unnecessary. Moreover it is necessary to use some medium which rubs off the impurities from the skin.
This invention relates to a cleansing means which takes these considerations into account and consists of leather felt which absorbs the aqueous soap solution and the means accelerating the evaporation of the water of the said 40 solution. A soap solution is used for cleansing,
while acetone, for example, is used as the means for assisting the evaporation; and leather felt is used as the carrier or vehicle for the two substances, as leather felt can absorb large quantities of both of them. A diluted solution of soap in alcohol or spirits mayalsobe used instead of acetone. In this way a skin cleansing means is obtained that takes uplittle space and can be carried in a small glass or other air-tight container. When for example half a dozen pieces of leather felt are impregnated with soap solution and with acetone, and placedin a. glass,
nothing else is required for cleansing. Only one of the pieces is taken out, the hands soiled with 55 oil and grease are rubbed with it, and the re- Serial No. 653,170. In Germany January 5,
mai'ni mo s e uickly evaporates together with the acetone.\
The use of That felt ate support fora cleansing means, for exam 1e or water, is already known, but it is new to e felt as a support for 5 soap solution and acetone and it is only with this-combination that it is possible to obtain the desired effect in the special conditions referredto above. k
The use of felt as the absorbent for the cleansing and drying liquid has the following aHvantages: In a relatively small space it is possi 1e to store and to keep a comparatively *large amount of the cleansing liquid. The piece of felt impregnated in this way can be easily carrled, and given any desired shape and is therefore exceedingly handy. The felt is also so thick and strong that it replaces the usual brush, pumice stone and scrubbing sand.
It is desirable to use leather felt, but it is also possible to use felt made from animal or vegetable fibres or from a mixture of such fibres- In any case the skin can be cleansed with the felt impregnated with soap solution and acetone without using any water, so that the usual carrying of water, soap, brush, towel and the like is dispensed.
- If it is desired to produce a disinfecting action, the impregnating mixture may be furthenmixed with disinfectants, also with' scents when it is desired to have a skin cleansing means that has a pleasant odor.
Example 1 f. i. by immersing the felt in said mixture.
Example 2 Out of alcohol and soap is prepared a solution. With 10 parts of this solution 90 parts of water are mixed and the felt saturated therewith.
What I claim is: r

2. An article of manufacture for cleansing the skin comprising an absorbent body impregnated V with an aqueous soap solution and acetone, said body being normally saturated with said liquids, and said liquids evaporating readily when the body is applied to the skin.
3. An article of manufacture for cleansing the skin comprising. an absorbent body impregnated with an aqueous soap solution and alcoholic soap solution, said body being. normally saturated r skin comprising an absorbent body impregnated with a mixture of about 10 parts of alcoholic soap solution and about 90 parts of water, said body being normally saturated with said liquids, and said liquids evaporating readily when the body is applied to the skin.
6. An article of manufacture for cleansing the skin comprising a leather felt body impregnated with an aqueous soap solution and a water evaporating agent, said body being normally saturated with said liquids, and said liquids evaporating readily when the body is applied to the skin.
7. In an article as set forth in claim 6, said water evaporating agent comprising acetone.
8. In an article as set forth in claim 6, said water evaporating agent comprising alcohol.
