Description

March 5, 1935. A. c. DAVIS GUARD FOR WRINGER ROLLS Filed June 12. 1934 Patented Mar. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES ,PATEN'T .OFFIICE.
' p 1 ,993,319 o v f o GUARD FOR WRINGER ROLLS I Arthur 0. Davis, Canton, ohio 7 Application June 12,1934, Serial No. 730,207 4 C1aims. ((11. 68-32) The invention relates to a guard for'the rolls of a clothes wringer and more particularly to means for guarding the wringer rolls; against.
articles passing therethrough from becoming en- 5 tangled around the rolls.
In the use of the ordinary clothes wringer, it frequently happens that articles instead of passing properly through the wringer rolls will adhere to one roll or the other, often resulting intea'ring of thearticle or even damage to the wringer rolls and making it necessary to reverse the movementof the rolls to untangle the artis cles therefrom. f
The object of the'present improvement is to provide a guard or stripper for each roll of a clothes wringer arranged to prevent articles from adhering to either roll, causing them to pass through the rolls in proper fashion.
It is known that attempts have been made to provide guards or strippers upon clothes wringers but such devices as have been attempted in the past do not allow for any variation in the size of the rolls, making it necessary to form and mount each guard to, accommodate the particu-' lar roll on which it is to be used and not providing for any adjustment of the guard to compensate for wear upon the rolls.
A further object of the invention is to pro-' vide an adjustable guard for clothes wringer rolls adapted to compensate for variation in size or for wear'upon the rolls.
A further object is to provide such a guard comprising a substantially flat member stationary relative to the'bearings of the roll and a pair of curved stripper members adjustably mounted upon the flat member.
The aboveobjects, together with others which will be apparent from an inspection of the drawing and the following description, or which may be later pointed out, may be attained by constructing the improved clothes wringer guard in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, showing a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes wringer with the improved guard applied thereto;
Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale taken as on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a detached perspective View of the guard for the upper roll; and e Fig. 4, a similar view lower roll. 7
Similar numerals refer to similar throughout the drawing.
The improved guard to which the invention perof .the guard for the the open slots 22 formed bars 29 are adjustably carried by the fiat central 5 tains may be attached to a wringer of any usual and well known design which is provided with a frame including the channel upright end members 10 in which are mounted the-upper and lower roll bearing blocks 11 and 12 respectively, 5 the lower blocks being adapted to rest upon stops 13 in the lower portions of the uprights 10, and the upper blocks" being-engaged by thespring 14 carried in thetop crossbar 15 and adjusted as 0 'by the screw 16.
The upper andlowerrolls 17 and 18 respectively aremounted on the shafts-wand 20 respectively, the ends of Which'project beyond the rolls and form journals, the upper-journals being received in the elongated openings 21 in the bearing blocks 11 and the lower journ'als'in in the upper faces of the blocks 12. 1
The lower roll 18 may be positively driven in: either direction in usual and ordinary manner 20 as by gearing enclosed in the gear box 23. The usual drain table 24 may be provided at the lower end of the wringer frame and the-shields 25 may be carried in the channel uprights 10 at opposite ends of the rolls. 25
All of the above parts may be of any .usual and well known construction such as common in clothes wringers and the wringer in itself forms no part of the invention but is merelyillustrated in order to show the application of the improved guard thereto. 7
Each of the roll guards is preferably formed of sheet metal or similar material and includes a central flat member and two curved guard or stripper members adjustably connected thereto and adapted to be positioned so that their edges are located on opposite sides of the roll near the center thereof and spaced just sufficiently from the surface of the roll to prevent contact therewith.
The guard for the lower roll 18 comprises the flat central strip of sheet metal 26, the ends of which may be slightly curved as at 2'7 to .fit upon the shield flange 25. Spring clips 28 are fixed to the underside of the strip 26 at theend portions thereof to engage beneath the shieldflanges 25 so as to position the lower guard and hold it against vertical movement. I v
The curved sheet metal guard or stripper memmember '26 as by the screws 30 located through v 7 slots 31 formed in the curved members 29, When parts the lower guard is positioned in the wringer, these curved guard or stripper members 29 areadjusted so that their 'free edges .32 will be spaced from 36 in the members 34 The edges 37 of these curved guard members 34 are positioned at op'pe-- site sides of the upper roll 1'7 near the center-- thereof and spaced therefrom just sufiiciently to prevent contact with the roll. i
With this construction, as; articles are passed through the wringer in either direction, it will be seen that any article whichhas a tendency to adhere to. on roll or the other will be str p ed from the roll by the Qurvedguard members and aus d to pass pr p rly through the wrineer in: stead of windin upm the mil, hu preventing tearing of the articles as well as damage to the rolls. I e
I claim:
1. In a wringer having a ot tabl rolls iou neled therem, uards fo th rolls, each guard including a flat member mount d p n th frame, and a pa r 0! curved m m adiu ta ly connected to the flat memb r and rminating adjacent to opp si e sid sot the cor-rep din r01 r members, a guard for irameand a pai of ing the same to said'shields' 2. In a wringer having a frame including spaced channel members, bearing blocks slidable in said channel members, rolls jcurnaled in said bearing blocks, and a spring pressing upon the bearing blocks of one roll, a guard for each roll including a flat member and two curved members adjustably connected to the flat member and terminating adjacent to opposite sides of the roll, the ends of one flat member being located between said spring nd the adjacent bearing blocks. i 3. In awringer having a frame including spaced channel members, bearing blocks slidable in said channel members, rolls journaled in said bearing blocks, and shields upon said channel members,
a guard for each roll including a flat member and two curved members adjustably connected to the "-flat member and terminating adjacent to opposite sides of the roll, and spring clips upon the ends of one fiat member for attaching the same to said shields.
4. In awringerhaving a frame including spaced channel members, ,bearing'blocks slidable in said channelmembers, rolls ieurnaled insaid bearin blocks, and a spring pressing upon the bearin blocks of one roll, and shields upon said channel each roll including a flat member and two curved members adjustably con nected to the flat member and terminating adia cen t pposite 'sides'ofthe roll, the ends of one flat member being IQcated-betWeen said; spring and the adjacent bearing-block and spr neclips up n the ends of the other flat member for attach- ARTHUR opens.
