Application filed November 12, 1926, Serial No. 147,880, and in Belgium June 10, 1926.
This invention relates to a cover for the guideways of slicing machines, and has for its object the provision of a device of the class named which shall be simple and economical to manufacture and efficient in operation, and which shall protect the guideways of slicing machines or similar devices from the accumulations of foreign matter thereon, and which shall cover said guidewa 'vs so that their oily surface will not be prominently visible.
The invention is exemplified in the combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification, and it is more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. v

The numeral 10 designates the base or frame of a slicing machine of well-known construction having a reciprocating table 11 mounted to slide on ways 12 and 13. The guideway 12 is in the form of a cylindrical rod or bar supported on posts 14: at opposite ends thereof and secured to the base 10 by bolts 15. The posts 14 have horizontal openmgs for receiving the ends of the guide 12 and the bolts 15 extend through transverse openings in the guides 12 to hold them firmly in place. The top ends of the posts 14 are rounded concentrically with the guides 12 and a curved cover plate 16 rests on the rounded tops of the posts 14. A suitable shaped washer 17 is interposed between the plate 16 and the head 18 of the bolt 15 so hat the cover plate 16 is securely clamped in place above the guide 12, the cover plate extending the full length of the guide but being spaced upwardly and outwardly from the top and sides thereof.
The reciprocating table 11 is provided with an arcuate groove 19 in the bottom face thereof for receiving the cover plate 16 and the guide 12. Slide bearings 20 are arranged to bridge the groove 19 and are secured to the lower face of the table 11 by cap screw 21.
The top of the bearing 20 is spaced below the lower face of the cover plate 16, while the bottom of the groove is spaced upwardly above the upper face of the plate 16. It is thus seen that the table 11 is mounted to slide freely on the guide rod 12 but suitable clearance is provided for the cover plate 16 so that it will not engage the moving parts. i
The guide rod 12 must be properly lubricated to permit free sliding movement of the table 11 thereon. The coverplate 16 will conceal the lubricated guide rod preson that a slicing machine must present an immaculate and attractive appearance. A clean and polished slicing machine attracts customers, while a machine which appears unsightly in any way repels trade. It is essential that the guide rod for the reciprocating table shall be properly lubricated but where an oily surface is visible on a slicing machine the customer sometimes unconsciously receives the impression of an untidy machine. Moreover, if the rod is exposed foreign matter will adhere to it, which may include particles of meat or other material sliced on the machine, and the rod will then in fact become unclean. Where the rod is properly protected bya device such as that shown in the drawing this accumulation of material on the oily surface of the guide rod is prevented.
I claim 1. The combination with a guide of a carriage arranged to travel upon said guide, and a cover for said guide said cover being separate and spaced from said guide.
2. The combination with a slicing machine having a reciprocating carriage and a guide on which said carriage travels, of a The curved section carriage on said guide without contact with said cover.
4. The combination with a reciprocating carriage and a guide for said carriage, of a cover for said guide, and a sliding bearing for supporting said carriage on said guide, a portion of said bearing being movable between said cover and guide.
5. The combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a guide rod for said carriage, a cover plate arranged longitudinally of said guide rod, and a bearing secured to said carriage and slidably engaging said guide.

6. The combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a guide rod for said carriage, a bearing secured to said carriage and slidable on said guide'rod, and a transversely curved cover plate extending longitudinally of said guide rod and supported at opposite ends of the path of travel of said carriage. 7. The combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a guide rod for said carriage, a cover plate disposed over said guide rod and extending longitudinally thereof, and means for supporting'saidrcover plate at opposite ends of the path of travel of said carriage, said carriage having a recess extending therethrough for receiving said cover plate.
8. The combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a guide rod for supporting said carriage, a bearing secured to said carriage and slidably mounted on said guiderod, a cover plate supported at opposite ends of the path of travel of said carriage and spaced from said guide rod, said carriage and bearing being spaced apart to provide a recess for the passage of said cover plate.
97 The combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a guide rod for said carriage having a recess in the lower face thereof, a bearing bridging said recess and slidably engaging said guide rod, said bearing being spaced from said carriage and a cover plate disposed over said guide rod and extending through said recess between said bearing and carriage.
10. The combination with a slicing machine having a reciprocating carriage and a guide rod for supporting said carriage, of a cover plate disposed over said guide rod and extending longitudinally thereof, means for supporting said guide rod and cover plate at opposite ends of the path of travel of said carriage, and a bearing secured to said carriage and slidably engaging said guide'rod, said bearing being spaced-from said carriage to provide a recess for receiving said cover plate.
11. In combination with a slicing machine havinga reciprocable table, of a slide element attached to said table, a stationary cover for said element withinwhich said element is r'eciprocable, said cover extending between said slide element and table, and rigid connecting means attached to said table and slide element, said connecting means extending beneath said cover to said slide element.
