1 Claim.
' 'This 'invention relates to'cigar'ette making Ycle-- vicesand more particularly to a device for making or rolling of an individual cigarette.
rAnrobject of this invention is to provide a cigarette making machine of relatively simple construction which issolconstructed as yto roll the tobacco in the paper in such a manner as to elim inat'e thenecessity of subsequently trimming the ends of the roll.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a device of this kind an adjustable apron sothat the rolled cigarette will be of the desired compactness.
I'he above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
Figure l is a detail top plan View of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention partly broken away;
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of the device;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure e is a longitudinal sectional view partly in detail taken substantially through the longitudinal center of the device showing the carriage in its initial position;
Figure 5 is a similar view but showing the carriage in operative position intermediate the ends of the base.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally the base of a. device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention which may be constructed of any desired material such as wood, light metal or the like, and is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 13 therein within which a connecting bar 11 of a carriage C is positoned.
This carriage C has side plates 12a disposed on the opposite sides of the body or base 10 and an operating bar or member l2 is connected by means of a bolt 14 or the like to this carriage C and eX- tends through a hole l5 provided in an end plate 16 secured to one end of the base l0. The projected end of the operating member 12 is upturned as at 17. This end plate 16 is secured to the base 10 by means of screws or securing members 18. Another base plate 19 is secured to the opposite end of the base 10 by means of screws or securing elements 20 or the like.
This base 10 is provided intermediate its ends with a rolling table "21 which is 'flat on the upper surface thereof and is provided with divergent opposite end portions 22 and 23. The base is also provided with a transversely disposed pocketor recess 24 adjacent theend thereof `op-positely'from the operating member 12. I
Anrapron or flexible member 25 has one" end thereof vsecured to one end of the base '10 by means of a plate 26 which is secured to the base 10 by means of screws 27 or the like and this end of the apron 10 is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending slots 28 so that if desired, the length of the apron may be adjusted relative to the length of the base as will be hereinafter described. The oppositeI end of the apron 25 is secured to the base 10 inwardly of the end plate 16 by means of a plate 29 which is secured to the upper surface of the base 10 by means of securing members 30 or the like. This opposite or forward end of the base 10 is preferably offset downwardly as at 31 vand provides a receiving table to re n Con a shaft 36 and the periphery of this roller 35 is adapted to engage the upper surface of the apron disposed on the table 21. This roller 35 is preferably of relatively soft construction'such as rubber or the like, and is fluted or serrated'so that when the paper P is engaged thereby, the roller will not force the paper forwardly but will force the paper inwardly between thel looped portion v of the apron 25 as the carriage C moves forwardly of the base 10. f
In the operation ofy this device, the carriage C is initially moved to a position adjacent the rear end of the base 10 andthe vapron 25 is looped downwardly into the pocket or recess 24. This pocket will be disposed intermediate the front and. rear edges of the side plates 12a, which plates will operate to prevent spilling of any of the tobacco placed in the looped portion of the apron 25 in the pocket 24. This tobacco is distributed evenly across the pocket 24 and the operating member or handle 17 may then be pulled forwardly so as to move the carriage C. When the carriage C reaches the rear end of the table 21, the paper P may then be placed on the upper surface of that portion of the apron positioned on the table 21 and the gummed edge of the paper moistened whereupon the carriage C may then be moved forwardly an additional distance so that the leading roller will contact with the paper P. The paper will be held against movement relative to the table 21 and relative to the carriage C so that as this carriage C moves forwardly, the paper will be drawn inwardly of the rolling loop 37 as shown in Figure 4:.4 When thecarriage C reaches the end of the table 21, the paper P will be wrapped entirely around the tobacco 38 and when the carriage C passes the forward edge portion 22 of the table, the rolled or completed cigarette will roll downwardly onto the plate 29 which constitutes the receiving table for receiving the cigarette after it is rolled. Preferably the end plate 16 projects upwardly or above the upper surface of the plate 29 so that the rolled cigarette will not roll off of the base 10. Due to the slots 28 and 30 in the apron 25, this apron 25 may be adjusted to the desired degree so that the tobacco will be appropriately packed within the paper P.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim.
What is claimed isz- A cigarette rolling machine comprising a table having a transversely extending pocket adjacent one end thereof,'the side walls of the pocket being inclined upwardly in the direction of the opposite end of the table, an apron engaging over the table, said apron having one end thereof xed relative to the table and the opposite end provided with a pair of elongated slots, means engaging the end of the table and extending through the slots to adjustably secure said opposite end of the apron to the table, a U-shaped carriage having the bight disposed below the table, means engaging the bght yof the carriage for slidably mounting the carriage relative to the table, said carriage having side members having a Width sufficient to close the ends of the pocket during the initial filling of the pocket and throughout the movement of the carriage, a roller rotatably carried by the parallel arms of the carriage and engaging beneath the apron, and a. carriage operating member secured to the bght of the carriage beneath the table and extending through an end of the table to permit movement of the carriage relative to the table.
