Description
E. FI ER OLD FOR Feb. 12, 1935. v.
DETAGHABLE IRON n 1120mm BOARDS Filed 1932 INV TORI v ATTO EY- Patented Feb. 12, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DETACHABLE IRON HOLDER FOR. IRONING BOARDS 1 Claim.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be used about ironing boards for the purpose of resting and holding an iron temporarily during the ironing operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a detachable holder for irons to eliminate the necessity for setting the iron down on the ironing cloth and thus to avoid burning the cloth with the iron.
A further object of my invention is to provide a support and protection for the iron so that it will not easily drop off the board and a support which may be detached when the ironing is finished.
A further object of my invention is to provide a detachable support and protection for irons on an ironing board arranged when in use in a manner adapted to permit the iron to be slid over' on it and not lifted so many times during the op-'- eration..
A particular object of my invention is to provide an economical, simple and convenient detachable iron holder for ironing boards which will accomplish the above mentioned purposes and be made within the reach of every family.
I attain the objects of my invention by the device described in the annexed specification, recited in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the figures:
Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the device shown in Figure 1 but inverted.
Figure 3 is a perspective showing my invention detachably secured to an ironing board.
Figure 4 is a side View of my invention shown as when attached to an ironing board with the ironing board shown in cross section.
Referring in detail to the construction of my invention and the preferred manner of using the same, my invention consists in a novel combination of an iron holder and brackets adapted to detachably hold the same on an ironing board and including a holding plate 1 preferably of metal and having side flanges 2, 3, and 4 adapted to provide a guard flange about the holding member 1 to prevent the iron from slipping off when resting thereon.
This holding member is provided with a sloping front edge 5 adapted to normally press down on the ironing board cloth 15 so that the iron may be easily slid over on the holder 1 without having to be lifted to get it there.
It has been estimated that during an ordinary domestic ironing that an iron is lifted from the board from eight hundred to twelve hundred times and thus such a convenience wouldbe a help.
In order to provide means for detachably holding the plate member 1 in suitable position on the ironing board I prefer toprovide a pair of curved holding brackets 6 and'l preferably secured to flanges 2 and 4 by rivets 8 and 9 respectively while at the free ends 10 and 11 respectively of these brackets I prefer to provide thumb screws 12 and 13 respectively for engaging the ironing board 14 in the manner illustrated in Figure 4. a
Figure 4 illustrates the manner in which the ironing board cloth 15 is held down by the sloping front edge 5 of holding plate 1.
In order to keep the holding plate 1 from burning the ironing cloth when it is placed upon the ironing board with the iron on it, I provide an asbestos pad 16 shown in Figure 2 secured .to the board surface of holding member 1 where it may be clamped by lower clamps 17, 18, and 19.
To those who are familiar with the manufacturing operations in making such devices it will be evident that minor changes may be made in the detachable plate member 1 and its flanges and lowerclarnp members as well as changes made in the form of bracket members 6 and '7 without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be observed that brackets 6 and '7 may be secured to the holding plate and flanges in any suitable place to engage the plate or to enable 'the holding plate to be placed in a convenient position on the ironing board without being i the way of the ironing operations. a
It will be further noted that the holding plate may be round about the sides and back or square cut as shown in the drawing or any other suitable shape to guard the iron and yet be convenient to handle.
Having thus described the nature of my invention what I claim is:
In a detachable iron holder for ironing boards the combination comprising a flanged and ribbed metallic plate bent down along its front edge, an asbestos shield secured to the bottom of the metallic plate, a pair of underslung holding arms secured to the side flanges of said plate and provided at their free ends with holding thumb screws VIOLA E. FIEDLER.
