Description
/ Fb. 5, 1935. s. CIZIN 1,990,402
SOCKET Filed May 23, 1933 Jami (7)171 E ATTO R N EY Patented Feb. 5, 1935 UNITED 2 Claims.
This invention relates to sockets for electric lamps, and has for the primary object the provision of a theft proof device wherein the electric lamp may be efficiently locked to its respective socket and, with the latter secured to its support, unauthorized removal of the lamp is positively prevented.
With this and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of contruction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a socket constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views illustrating a support or guide for a locking jaw, the views being taken at right angles to each other.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a body constructed of insulating material and has formed upon its lower edge oppositely disposed attaching or anchoring ears 2 so that suitable fasteners may be passed through the ears for securing the body to a support. The body has a chamber 3 opening outwardly through the bottom of the body, while the top wall of the body is provided with an opening 4 communicative with the chamber 3 for the purpose of permitting an electric lamp base to be passed through the opening.
An insulated cup 5 is located in the chamber 3 about the opening 4 so that the base of the lamp may extend into the cup. The cup is removably secured to the base by a strap 6' secured to the base by screws or like fasteners. The strap is of substantially U-shape so as to underlie the cup and retain the latter in alinement with the opening 4. A metallic shell 6 is removably secured in the cup by fasteners 7 and is provided with a slot 8 to permit a contact 9 carried by the cup to enter the shell. The contact 9 is secured to the cup by a fastener 10 and the latter is also connected to a conductor strip 11 provided with a binding terminal to which an electric conductor is connected. A similar conductor strip 12 is carried by the cup 5 and is connected with the shell 6. The shell 6 is provided with threaded portions 13 to engage with the threads on the base of the electric lamp.
The cup and shell are provided with alined slots in which are mounted brackets or guides 14 slidably supporting jaws 15 having arcuate serrated faces 16 to engage and frictionally grip the base of the electric lamp. The brackets or guides 14 are secured to the body by screws or like fasteners. Adjusting bolts 17 are journaled to the jaws and threaded to ears 18 carried by the guides or brackets 14. The heads 19 of the bolts may be engaged by a suitable wrench placed in the body 1 by Way of the bottom thereof so as to adjust the jaws into and out of engagement with the base of the electric lamp and when in engagement with the base of the electric lamp unauthorized removal of the latter from the socket is prevented. After the jaws have been adjusted to the base of the lamp the body 1 is secured in position upon its support, thereby preventing a person from operating the bolts to release the jaws from the base of thelamp.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A socket comprising an insulated body having a chamber opening outwardly through one end thereof, means for securing the body to a support to close the chamber, said body having an opening in communication with the chamber, an insulated cup in said chamber and secured to the body and surrounding the opening, a contact lining secured in the cup and threaded to receive the base of an electric lamp by way of said last-named opening, said cup and lining having slots, a terminal contact to engage the base of the lamp and mounted to the cup and spaced from the lining, serrated jaws slidably mounted in the slots to engage with the base of the lamp, and adjusting bolts connected to the jaws and located within the chamber and adapted to be operated by a wrench inserted through the first-named end of the body for moving the jaws towards and from the base of the lamp.
2. A socket comprising an insulated body having a chamber opening outwardly through one end thereof, means for securing the body to a support for closing the chamber, said body having an opening in communication with the chamber, an insulated cup in said chamber and secured to the body and surrounding the opening, a contact lining secured in the cup and threaded to receive the base of an electric lamp by way of said last-named opening, said cup and lining having slots, a terminal contact to engage the base of the lamp and mounted to the cup and spaced from the lining, guides extending through the slots and secured to the body, serrated jaws supported by said guides to engage the base of the lamp, and adjusting bolts threaded to the guides and connected to the jaws for adjusting the latternrelative to the base of the lamp.
