scaffolding.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
VILLIAM KYLE, OF OLEVEIJAND, OHIO.
ilMPROVEMENT IN LADDER-SCAFFOLDS.
Specifioation forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,947, dated J anuary S, 1878; application filed November 6, 1877.
` To all 'whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, WILLIAM KYLE, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in `jacks to be used in connection with ladders in forming scaftolding,
' which im provement is fully set forth in the fol- `Venient scaffolding may be constructed for painters? or similar use; and consists of a jack so constructed that it may be hung on any of the rounds of the ladder and adjusted for holding boards for a platform, or upon which a Workman can stand while working upon the side ofbuildings.
In the drawin g, A A are common ladders, which form the supports for the jacks and These jacks consist of a board, B, to which is hinged a leaf, O. Said leaf is supported at its outer edge by a brace' or arm, D, which is also hinged to the under side of the leaf, and passes down through a slot near the lower end of the board B. For adjustin g the leaf at the proper angle with relation to the board B, the lever is provided With a series of holes, dd, for inserting a pin, dz, which retains the leaf at any given angle.
On the rear side of the board B are placed hooks E E, for Ahanging the device onto the rounds of the ladders. These hooks may be made adjustable by being put through slots in .against a building at a proper inclination and at proper distances apart, the before-described jacks may be carried up and hung where required, the leaf adjusted to the required angle to make it level, and then a board or plank placed on the said jacks, and a safe, simple, and convenient scafolding is formed.
When the sc'affolding becomes too distant from the building, as the Work progresses downward, the jacks maybe placed on the inside of the ladders, or the side of the ladders toward the building, as seen at F, Fig. 1, again bringing the scaifolding within easy reach` for work on the sides of the building.
Having described my invention, I claim- The device herein described, consisting of the board B, provided With hooks E E and slots for adjus-tment of the same, and of the brace, hinged leaf O, and hinged brace D, having holes d and pin (12, constructed and arranged to operate in combination with yladders A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM KYLE.
