DEVICE TO PREVENT ROLLER LAPS IN TWISTING MACHINES Filed Aug 21, 1933 chi/26$ 6. Grene Patented Jan. 15, 1935 PATENT OFFICE DEVICE TO PREVENT ROLLER LAPS IN TWISTING IVIACHINES James C. Greene, Selinsgrove, Pa.
Application August 21,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in a machine for twisting and doubling threads, to
prevent roller laps. Its object is the elimination of the waste of thread, yarn, etc. that occurs when they break while passing around the feed roll, and
the prevention of singles or the incorrect number of threads.
In the machines as now constructed, breaking threads, yarn etc. as they pass around the feed roll and separator will become attached around the feed roll and produce roller laps which requiresmuch time to remove and the loss of material which adds expense to the operation of the machine.
The various features of the invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 shows a twisting and doubling unit embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device on the feed roll. v
Figure 3 is a side view of the invention applied to a feed roll.
Figure 4 is an end elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawing: 1 indicates the bobbins from which the threads are taken, 2 the threads, 3 guiding means for the same, 4 a feeding roll journaled in a bracket 5 secured to a twisting and doubling machine. Fixed above the roll 4 and secured to the bracket 5 is an arm 6 which retains the usual porcelain separator '7. Depending from said arm 6 immediately in back and below said separator 7 is a horizontal arm 8 on which is hinged a concave knife 9 adapted to rest or ride freely at all times on the feed roll 4 and parallel therewith. The continuous action 1933, Serial No. 686,132
of the revolving feed roll 4 under the edge of the knife 9 sharpens the edge of the same.
In the usual operation of the machine of the type described the threads are released from the bobbins stationed above, pass through guides and 5 then over the roll and porcelain separator a number of times and then to the receiving bobbins beneath. If for any reason the threads should break while passing over or around the feed roll, the broken ends will tend to wrap around the said feed roll, and after a time, many rollerlaps are formed. The function of the hinged knife riding on the feed roll is to prevent the broken ends of threads from wrapping around the roll. The Waste of material and time occupied in removing the roller laps is an expense in the operation of the machine, whichis obviated by the device herein described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination of a rotated thread feeding roll, a thread separator positioned above said feeding roll, a bracket or support positioned between said feeding roll and separator, a cutting edge or knife hinged on said bracket adapted to ride on the face of said feeding roll for the purpose specified.
2. In a machine of the class described, in combination of a rotated thread feed roll, a thread separator positioned above said feed roll, a bracket positioned between said feed roll and separator, a curved knife hinged on said bracket and adapted to ride on the face of said feed roll, said knife edge being sharpened by engagement with said moving feed roll.
JAMES C. GREENE.
