positioned beneath the free end of the sear 28 a lateral arm 38 directed toward the sear 28 and positioned rearwardly of the'block 18. For purposes presently to appear, the rear end of the sear 36 carries a block 39 rising therefrom.
The cross pin carried by'the trigger plate for the operation of the sear'28 of the right hand firing mechanism moves in a zone spaced from the operative end of the sear 36 of the left hand firing mechanism and to form communication between the cross pin on the trigger and the sear of the left hand firing mechanism, there is provided a slide member illustrated in the several figures and in detail in Figure 5as including a plate'40 having a straight lower edge 41 moving in the slot 42 parallel with the slot 22a in the block 18 and also in the slot 42a in the lower tang 15.. The slideplate 40 is permitted both sliding and pivotal movementby' means of the slot 43 in the plate 40 receiving the trigger pivot pin 24. In view of the location of the bolting mechanism 19 rearwardly of the frame 10 and between the upper and lower tangs 14 and 15, the forward'end of the slide plate 40 has been designed to escape the bolting mechanism in its sliding movement andfor operative engagement with the hammer 25 of the right hand firing mechanism, the forward end of the slide plate 40,carrying angle rm extensions 44 and 45 with the free end of the arm 45 engaged with the hammer'25 so that when the hammer ,25 is in cocked position, the slide plate 40 is moved rearwardly, guided insuch movement by the pivot pin 24'of the trigger and also by the slots 42 and 42a in the block 18 and tang 15, the slide plate 40 moving rearwardly against tension of the spring 46 shown in Figure 2. The connection between the trigger pin 31 an slide plate 40 includes an upper opening slot 47 in the rear end of the trigger plate 40 into which the trigger pin 31 extends and is confined therein by the. forwardly extending lug 48 shown in Figures 2, 3 and 5 as overhanging the slot 4'7. The firingniechanisms are provided with a safety device for rendering them inoperative, the safety device being manually operable while the usual rod associated with the bolting mechanism for the automatic setting of the safetydevice had to be done away with to provide a clearance for the mounting of the coil member or inertia piece. The inertia piece 49 of triangular formation is pivotally suspended as at 50 from the upper tang -14,. being tensioned as at 5l and mounted with relation to the block 39 carried bylthe sear 36 of the left hand firing mechanism to be moved to .a position overlying the block 39' during recoil action to prevent accidental firing of the second firing mechanism, the inertia piece 49 carrying a stop lug 52 for limiting recoil movement of-Hthe inertia piece and assuring a recoil position thereof during action. The safety for the firing mechanism includes a block 53 pivotally mounted as at '54 upon the lower tang 15 and as shown in Figure 1, carries a laterally projecting pin 46 to be moved to a position overlying thetrigger plate 21 by means of the leg 55 of a bell crank lever that is pivotally mounted as at 56 upon a, bracket 57 rising from the tang 15 with the other leg 58 ofvthe bell crank lever operated by a slide 59 disposed above the upper tang 14 and guided in its movement on the guide members 60 of the gun as illustrated in Figure 1 in its cocked position. With the hammer 25 cocked, the slide plate 40 is moved rearwardly against the tension of the spring 46, the slide plate being guided in its movement through the slots 42 and 42a in the block 18 and tang 15 with the upper rear end 40a of the-slide plate 40 positioned rearwardly of the lateralarm 38 carried by the sear 36 of the left hand or second firing mechanism, but when the slide p1ate40 is at its limit of rearward movement, the cross pin 31 carried by the trigger plate 21 is still engaged in the slot 47 of the plate 40 so that when the trigger 20 is operated for releasing the right hand or first firing mechanism, the slide plate 40 pivotally moves upon the pivot pin 24 of the trigger that passes through the slide plate slot 43 with the rear end 40aof the slide plate-moving upwardly but escaping the lateral arm 38 on the sear 36, this position being illustrated in Figure 2. When the right hand firing mechanism is released as illustrated in Figure 2, the inertia piece 49 swings to the position as illustrated above the block 39 carried by the sear 36 to prevent accidental operation of said sear. When pressure on the trigger is relieved, the spring associated with the sear 28 restores the trigger to the position shown in Figure 3 and at which time the spring 46 moves the slide plate 40 forwardly to position,
the upper end 40a of the slide platebeneath the cross arm 38 of the sear 36 for the operation of the sear of the left hand or second firing mechanism. As stated, the slide plate is guided in its movement through the slot 42a in the tang 15 and through the slot 42 in the block 18, the forward angle arm extensions 44 and45 on the slide plate being provided for clearing the bolting mechanism 19 so that the free end of the arm 45 is positioned for engagement with the hammer 25 to be controlled in its operation by said hammer. I
