IMPROVEMENT IN LAB E LS FOR CIGARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,724, dated December 25, 1877 application filed December 6, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, G. W. YERBY, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels or Tags for Cigars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,reference being had tothe accompanying grawings, which form part of this specifica- My invention relates to an improvement in labels or tags for cigars; and it consists in the combination of a metallic band and a paper label or tag, the paper label ortag being secured directly to the metallic band, and either or both of them being marked or lettered with the name or the trade-mark of the manufacturer. These two tags are to be se cured together in such a manner that the very act of removing the paper will destroy it, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.

or represents a metallic band, made of some very light elastic sheet metal, and which-has an eye or slit through one end, through which the opposite end passes, as shown. This band is passed around the cigar, the smaller end passed through the eye, and is then bent backward upon itself in any suitable manner, or otherwise held, so that the two ends will not become separated. The larger end of the band, through which the eye or slot is made, has also a number of small perforations made through it from the inside, so that the metal, which is punched up in making the perforations, shall form a roughened surface, as shown. Just before this metallic band is passed around the cigar and fastened in place, a small paper tag or label, 0, having a slit through one end, is passed over the small end of the metallic label, so that after the ends of the metallic label have been fastened together the paper label 0 cannot be removed without tearing it off. The opposite end of the paper label 0 is provided with any suitable sticking substance, so that after the end of the metallic label has been fastened in p0 sition the end of the paper label, having the adhesive substance on its inner side, will pass along over the joint of the metallic band, and 7 The paper labels that are stuck to the cigar itself are very objectionable in many respects, and for this reason I make this paper tag or label 0 stick almost, if not wholly, to the metallic label, and not to the cigar.

If desired, the paper tag may be made slightly larger than the widest end of the metallic band, so that the paper will slightly adhere to the cigar upon each side of the band, and thus prevent the metallic band from being slipped back and forth. 1

Either one or both the metallic and paper labels may have stamped, marked, or otherwise imprinted upon them the name or trademark of the manufacturer, or any suitable figure or design which will serve to mark the cigars in such a manner as to indicate the brand or manufacture.

In the act of smoking the cigar, if the smoker does not care to remove them beforehand, both the label and the metallic band will be totally destroyed by the fire, so that they cannot be used again.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- I l. The combination of a metallic band, havin g a portion of its surface roughened, with a paper tag or label secured thereto, substantially as set forth.

2. The paper tag or label, having a slit cut through one end, and the other end provided with an adhesive substance, whereby it may be secured to the metallic band, substantially as specified.
