7 Claims. (01. 46-946 This invention relates to sound'producing'devices and particularly to those employing, as the sound producing members, reeds which are vibrated by forcing air through the device as is done for example, in horns, various animal calls, noise producers for rubber balls, dolls and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the type set forth having an improved construction embodying few parts so arranged as to permit the assembling thereof rapidly and cheaply.
A further object is to provide a method of assembling the parts of a noise producing device which will permit the rapid and cheap manufacture thereof.
These and other objects which will be apparent to those skilled in this particular art are accomplished by the. invention hereinafter described, one embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a core member forming a part of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the noise making reed;
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic illustration of the manner of assembling the various parts; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the completed noise producing device of the present invention.
As illustrated, the present invention includes a hollow core 5 having an obliquely disposed mouth 6 and a cylindrical portion 7 having a seam 8 which gives to the cylindrical portion a certain degree of circumferential resiliency.
A vibratile reed 9 having an elongated'body portion 9' and a relatively wide noise producing end 10 is associated with the core so that the wider noise producing end extends across the obliquely disposed mouth 6.
The casing 11 is formed by an eyelet blank or some similarly shaped member having a bead 12 and a flange 13 at opposite ends. The casing surrounds the core and secures the reed 9 in place by frictionally gripping and holding the elongated body portion 8 between the inner wall of the casing and, the circumferentially resilientcylindrical portion 7 of the core. Such an arrangement eliminates the necessity for solder or any other binding material to secure the parts together.
In assembling the parts the core 5 is positioned over an upright supporting pin 14 on a suitable support 15 and the reed 9 is held over the mouth of the core by a reed holding instrument 16 on which the casing 11 is positioned, as shown in Fig. 3. By holding the end 10 of the reed across the 'mouth'6 of the core and simultaneously fore}- ing the casing downwardly over the core the lower end 9 of the reedis-clamped between the-inner Wall of Y the casing andthe cylindrical 'portionof the core'and'the reed is bent'to the desired shape, 5
as shown -in-Fig. '4. While not essential the seam 8 in the core insures sufficient circumferential resilience to make the assembling operation a simple one and to provide sufiicient frictional grip to hold the parts in assembled relation. The bending of the reed 9 by the act of assembling the parts permanently positions the noise making portion 10 across the oblique mouth 6 of the core. The beaded end of the casing permits its being readily inserted in the opening of a rubber ball, doll or other such article, the material of which is gripped between the bead 12 and the flange l3 and dislodgment of the device prevented.
It will be apparent that the present invention can be variously modified and adapted within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A noise producing device adapted to be 10- cated in an opening in the wall of a rubber ball, doll or the like comprising in combination a hollow core, a reed having a body portion extending longitudinally of said core and a sound producing portion extending across the open mouth of said core, and a casing completely enclosing the core and reed and formed by an eyelet blank having a rounded bead at one end and a flange at the other end to engage opposite faces of the wall of a rubber doll or the like when said casing is positioned in an opening extending therethrough.
2. The method of assembling the parts of a noise making device which comprises holding a reed in position across the mouth of a hollow core with the end thereof projecting beyond one side of said core, and forcing an eyelet blank over said reed and core to enclose said core and reed and to bend the projecting end of said reed into position beside the core and compress the same against the core to frictionally hold the parts together.
3. A noise producing device adapted to be 10- 4. A noise producing device adapted to be located in an opening in the wall of a rubber ball,
doll or the like comprising in combination a hollow circumferentially resilient core, a reed having an elonagted body portion extending longitudinally of said coreand a relatively wider sound producing portion extending across the open mouth of said core, and .acasing formed by an eyelet blank surrounding said reed and core with a compressive grip to frictionally hold the parts together, said casing having a rounded. 'head at one end and a flange at the other adapted to engage opposite faces of the wall of a. rubber doll or the like when said casing. is positioned in an opening extending therethrough;
5. A noise producing device adapted to"beilocated in an opening in the wall of a rubber ball,
doll or the like comprising in combinationiahollow circumferentially resilient slotted metal core, a reed having anelongated body portion extending longitudinally of said core anda relaitivelywider sound-producing portion extending across the open mouth of said core, and a casing formed by an eyelet blank having a rounded bead atone end and a flange at the other surrounding said reed and core with a compressive grip to said reed and core to bend the projecting end of saidtreed into position beside the core and frictionally hold the parts together.
Theimethodfof assembling the parts of a noise making devicewhich comprises holding a reed in position across the mouth of a hollow circumtere'ntialiy resilient core with the end thereof projecting at one side'of said core, and
forcing a casing member over said reed and core to bend the-projecting end of said reed into position beside-the core and compress the same against .the'core to frictionally hold theparts together. v
