FINISHING MACHINE Filed Nov. 11, 1929 2 Sheets-Shet 2 gi 40 I Fig.7.
H v m ll; 40 z 10 10 WW 2M a resiliently operated latch 24 which is pivoted on a fulcrum screw 26 supported by lugs 28 extending from the carrier 10. A spring 30 seated in a recess in the carrier is arranged to urge the latch about the fulcrum screw 26 to hold the rounded toe portion 32 of the latch in the notch 20 of the tool on the carrier.- By the above means the edge burnishing toolsare releasably secured to the carrier. g
In order to-secure the type of tool illustrated in Fig. 2 to the carrier in non-turning relation,- shoulders 34. are fixed to and arranged to ex tend from the carrier 10 and to embrace-opposite flat sides of this tool, as illustrated in Fig. 3,;
thereby positively resisting rotation oijthe tool on the carrier. I It is apparent that the shoulders 34 will be in Figs. 4 and 5 having a shank whichsis substantially circular in cross-section from rotating on the carrier. "However, in'orderefiectively to resist'rotation of such a toolonthe illustrated carrier, a heel portion 36 having'a planeface on" the latch 24 m proximity to the. fulcrum is arranged to bearon the-flat 22-01? the shank of the tool 18. Owing. to the relatively short moment arm between the heel portin 36 and the fulcrum screw'26, a relatively'strong. spring 30 will render the latch effective. to resist rotation between the tool 18 andthe carrier 10; but the desired rotation is allowed to occur between the carrierlO and the holder, as described in the above-mentioned Hamann application.
' The illustrated carrier 10 isurgedloutwardly of atool holder 38, which, like the holder in the Hamann machine referred toabove, is mounted to oscillate on a hollow shaft 39, by Tmeans of a spring 40 one end of which bears on the tool holder and the other end'being seated at the bottom of a recess in the carrier. Toallow a limited and yieldingly resisted rotative movement of the carrier 10 with respect to" the' holder '38,
the carrier has associated therewith a key 42 (Figs. '6 andw'7) :arrangedto engage aifiat 44 on the carrier andwhich is yieldingly heldin engagement therewith by means of a spring 46. The key 42 also is' restrained from all movement except that in "a plane perpendicular to the axis of the carrier in the key'holder 48.
It will now'be apparent, from a-consideration of Figs. 6 and '7, that when the'carrier' is rotated with respect to the holder acorner ofthe flat 44 will engage the key 42, rotating it .in its holder 38 about its end farthest removed'from the point of contact of the carrier and the key; and when the back of the key reaches the adjacent wall of the key holder its movement is positively limited. I As indicated inFig. 6, shoulders 50, 52 of the recess in the carrier, of which the flat 44 is the base, are separated by a'distance substantially greater than thewidth of the key 42. Before any work is presented to the tool-the spring 40-urges the carrier lobutwardlygof the holder 38 so that the shoulder 52 on the carrier against the tool to urge thecarrier inwardlyof the holder, this movement of the carrier ispos'itively limited when theshoulder 50 on the ,carrier engages the key 42. i It will now be apparent that the same means, namely the key device above described, is constructed yand;-arranged 'ments of the carrier as well as yieldingly to resist rotative movement of the carrier.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a finishing machine, the combination of a tool carrier mounted normally to have axial and rotativemovement, and meanson one end of said carrier for holding an; edgetreating tool in non-turning relation thereon. '2. In a finishing machine having a tool holder, the combination of a tool carrier mounted nor- :mally tohave axial and rotative movement of ,limitedextent in said holder while finishing the 'lwork, andmeans on one end of said carrier for releasably securing an edge treating. tool in nonturning relation thereto.
ineffective to. prevent a tool suchas 'dis'closed 3.-"In'a' finishi'ng"machine, the combination of a tool carrier mounted normally to have axial and rotative movement, and means on the end of J said carrier for releasably retaining an edge treating tool thereon and for positively resisting any rotation of said tool on said carrier.
