This invention pertains to new and useful improvements in machines for cutting keys.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a machine for duplicatlng keys of the type generally used in automobile locks, wherein the keys are issued'under a secret code number.
Important objects and the advantages of invention will readily become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings I Figure 1 represents a slde elevational View of the novel machine.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of'the machine.
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary detail sectional view of the machine.
' Fig. 1 represents a fragmentary detail sectional view. V
Fig. 5 represents a fragmentary detail sec tional view of the key gauge.
Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary detail sectional View of the blank supporting sleeve.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the novel machine includes a, supporting body 5 which is provided with a depending portion 6 carrying the screw clamp member 8 and associated clamp plates 7 shown in Fig. 1.
A bearing 10 on the body has the shaft of the notch cutting wheel 11 journaled therethrough and to which the crank 12 is secured at one end by the set screw 13. A barrel 14 in parallel relation to the bearing 10 and also located on the body 5 slidably receives the cylinder 15, to which the cylindrical gauge head 16 is secured by the bolt 17.
7 Longitudinally at spaced intervals the head 16 is provided with circumferentially ex tending grooves 18 within which the dog 19 is selectively engaged, the said dog being urged against the head 16 by the spring 20.
At the opposite end of the cylindrical The feed screw is operable by the handle 9, as clearly position the member from'the head16 is ablock i This block has a dove-tailed groove therein for slidably receivingthe plate 22 which has its longitudinal edge portions beveled for en} gagement in "thesaid dove-tailed groove.
The plate22 has-nuts 23* fixed thereto through "Whichj lthe feed screw 24: passes. This screw 24*is provided with a'knob 25 at one end and is-provided with a grooved extension 26 at its 27 in-theblock21.=1%- V "11A set screw28 is engageable in a borein theblock 21 to engageat' its inner end into the-grooved extension 26. 'The p'late 22 is provided with a shoulder 29, and between .this shoulder 29 and'theinner end of the plate 22; a movable clamp plate 30 is provided; the
samelbemg provided with a. reduced portion opposite end which engages within apocket 31-j=and*an inwardlydi sposed lip 32 which can engage in the usu'a'l slot in the key blank. Disposed through registering. openings in the plate 22' andplate 30is the bolt 33 on which' the winged nut -34-is engage'able where} :by th'e plate '30 can be clamped I against the plate 22 to secure-a key blank in the position shown substantiallyin {Fig 2.- I y I I? .An arm 35 is'pivotally mounted as at 36 upon the plate'22and isprovided with a yoke 37 at one end-for receiving the upstanding pin 38 onj the block 21. I A scale 39 isarranged I flectedgroove 18 of the head 16. Asthe notch is being formedin the blank, the knobf25 'can 'be rotated to permit the-cuttingof the notch'to the desired depth. I
shifting. the T Whilethe foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A key cutting machine comprising a supporting body, a shaft journaled therein, a cutter on one end of the shaft, a tubular part formed on the body and paralleling'the shaft, a member slidably arranged in the tubular part and having a plurality of notches in one end thereof, a spring-pressed dog for engaging any one of the notches for holding the sliding member in adjusted position, a plate supporting member at the opposite end of the sliding member, a transversely arranged sliding plate on said supporting member, means for holding a key on the plate, a screw shaft rotatably supported on the plate supporting member and engaging a threaded part on the plate for moving the plate towards and away from the cutter to bring the key against the cutter when the plate is moved towards the same, and means for rotating the shaft.
2. A key cutting machine comprising a supporting body, a shaft journaled therein, a cutter on one end of the shaft, a tubular part formed on the body and parallelingthe shaft, a, member slidably arranged in the tubular part and @having a plurality of notchesin one end thereof, a springepressed dog for engaging any one of the notches for holding the sliding member in adjusted position, av plate supporting member'atthe op.- posite end. of the sliding member, a transversely arranged sliding plate on said supthe plate towards and away from the cutter to bring the key against the cutter when the plate is moved towards the same, means for rotating the shaft, gauge means for indicating the amount of movement of the sliding plate, said means comprising a lever pivoted to the plate, a scale on the plate supporting member with which one end of the lever cooperates, the opposite end of the lever being forked and a pin on the plate supporting member extending into the space formed by the prongs of the fork.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HENRY W. DEVLIN.
porting member, means for holding a key on the plate, a screw shaft rotatably supported on the plate supporting member and engaging a threaded part on-the plate for moving the plate towards and away from the cutter to bring the key against the cutter when the plate is moved towards the same,
means for rotating the shaft, and gauge,
means for indicating the amount of move ment of the sliding plate.
8. A key cutting machine comprising a supporting body, a shaft journaled-therein, a cutter on one end of the shaft, a tubular part'formed on the body and paralleling the shaft, a member slidably arranged in the 1 tubular part and having a plurality of notches in one end thereof, a spring-pressed 7 dog for engaging any. one of the notches for holding the sliding member in adjusted position, a plate supporting member at the opposite end of the sliding member, a transversely arranged sliding plate on said sup porting member, means for holding a key on the plate, a screw shaft rotatably supported on the plate supporting member and engaging a threaded part on the plate for moving
