Description

Jan. 8,1935. w. HAMANN FINISHING MACHINE Filed Nov. 9, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 I sistance. To thisend, the illustrated tool hold.-
'35" to resist effectively rotative movement of theto'ol on the carrier,-.and .a resilient latch is arranged trated inFig: 1:. with parts removed;
' er; bymeansof the mechanism describ'edhere-f 65:
further feature of the invention, in the illustratplication Serial No. 406,350, filedon-November 11,
are.'more fully pointed out in the following'de tatably moun'teda tool holder 18 arranged to carlocking ofithe toolholder 1-8to the shaft 10 is efin the end: of the shaft 10 and which is arranged tor posed'lugsi22 on theholder are held within-com- 7 5 in the periphery of a driver 26 which is secured to the shaft 10 by means of a key 28. The key is retained in position by means of bolts 30 which, when tightened upon the key, lock the driver 26 securely to the shaft and prevent it from mov ing either about the shaft or axially thereof. The recesses 24 are formed in wear resisting liners 32.which are. rivetedto. the peripheryof the driver-26, as illustrated inf'FigI, 1. Itwill be noted from Fig. 2 that the sides of the lugs 22 which engage the sides of the liners 32 are oblique to each other and therefore, provide awedge fit between the holder 18 and the driver 26 when they are in theposition illlustratedin Fig. 2 where they are I lowniflocking engagement. The tension of yield toward and away from. the tool carrier; and he ;spring 20 which thus urges the holder 18 toarranged to engage a fiat onthecarrier ,ofqgreatv ard the driver 26 is transmitted thereto through er Width than that of the key-in masseuse-to- *an'ariti-friction' bearing comprising a series of allow a slight axial movement of the tooh 31 balls 351 interposed between a raceway 36 on the By the invention disclosed and claimed in apouter end of the holder 18 and a cooperating raceway 38 "through which extends a" flanged bushing 40which supports oneteird' of ith'e spring 20 on a and its carrier as is practicable to minimize wear at the tool connection, while still providing for easy removal of the tool.
With this in view and in accordance with a ed edge-finishing machine the tool holder is rotatably mounted and means is provided which is constructed and arrangedto permita predetermined limitedrotatiige movement of the tool-car;- rier relatively to the holder against yielding reer is provided with yielding means arrangedtoengage-the carrier for the edge burnishing'to'ol-to resist rotative movement of .thetool. \Asliere' shown, this means comprises af'keyg 1929;in the sname-tof Irving E. 21. In a finishing machine havingan oscillating tool holder, a spindle mounted to slide and to rotate in said holder, and meanscomprising I a yielding key arranged to engage a flat on said spindle constructed and arranged yieldingly to resist and positively tolimit sliding and rotative movements of said spindle in said holder. 1 22. In a finishing machine, an oscillating too holder having a recessed head, a tool retaining spindle mounted for limited axialand rotative movement in the recess of said head, and a springpressed key supported by said holder and arranged to engage a flaton said spindle thereby ,to resist rotation of the spindle.
K 23. In a finishing machine, an oscillating tool holder having a recessed head, a tool retaining spindle mounted for axial and rotative movement in the recess of said head, a flat on said spindle,
and a key yieldingly supported by said holder and narrower than said fiat constructed and arranged to allow but yieldingly to, resist axial and rotative movements of said spindlein' said head and positivelyto limit them. l
24. In a finishing machine, the combination of a tool holder, a tool carrier mounted for axial and rotative movements in saidholder, means for yieldingly resisting said movements, and means for releasably securing a burnishing tool on the end of said carrier in non-turning relation comprising a resilient latch arranged to resist axial displacement of the tool on the carrier, said carrier having a shoulder arranged to contact with a flattened side of said tool effectively to resist r0 tative movement of the tool on the carrier.
25. In a finishing machine, a holder for a plurality of tools, means foroscillating the holder tion of its oscillation and having notches at the extremities of said oblique surface, said holder having lugs arranged normally to be received in said notches, means for urging the tool holder into engagement with the oscillating means, and operator-controlled means for moving thetool holder so as to cause the lugs to be removed from said notches and to engage the said oblique surface on the operating means. i
2'7. In a finishing machine, a tool holder, an
oscillating support for said holder, and means for urging said holder into engagement with said.
support, saidsupport having a tool-holder-engagping surface which is oblique to thedirection of pressure of the tool holder thereagainst and having notches at each end of said oblique surface to receive a partof the tool holder.
