Description

A. P. MASON. Cheok-Rin for Harness.
Patented Dec. 25,1877.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ARNOLD P. MASON, OE OLEAN, NEW YORK, AS'SIGNO'R OE ONE-HALE His RIGHT 'ro EYRAM DEAN, OE SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN OHEOK-REINS FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,644, dated December 25, 1877 application file October 6, 1877. v
To all 'whom it may cmwem:q
Be it known that I, ARNOLD P. MASON, of Olean, in the county ofCattaraugus and State of New York, have inventeda new and valuable Improvement in Check-Rems; and I do hereby declare' that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being `had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specioation, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a view of my check-rein as applied to a harness, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a check-rein for harness, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the harness-saddle, with checkrein hook B and terrets C C. D D are the reins, attached to the bit-rings c a, and pass ing through lthe rings b b of the martingale E, and also through the terrets (l G. On each side is the check-rein G, running from the bit-ring a up through the gag-runner H, and ending with a loop, ring, or pulley, d.
I is a Strap, the middle of which lies in the check-hook B, and the ends pass through the loops or pulleys d in the ends of the reins G,
and back through the terrets C G, and secured to the lines or reins D D by buckles and loops, substantially as shown. By means of said buckles the strap I may belet out or taken up, as occasion may require.
By the use of the strap I, as arranged, in combination with the reins and lines, the head of the horse may be thrown up and held there at will without vthe use of a harsh bit.
The strap I plays through the check-hook B and pulleys d, giving freedom of the lines to guide the horse without throwing the head high up, which is the case with Such check reins as run from the bit over the head and direct to the drivingreins.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The check-reins G Gr, provided with the loops d d for the reception of the strap I, having a loop passing around the check-hook B, and adj ustably attached, by means of a buckle,
to the reins D, substan tially as described, and
for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ARNOLD P. MASON.
Witnesses MARTIN GARR, W. ROOKWOOD.
