IMPROVEMENT IN lLLUMlNATED-DIAL CLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,577, dated December 25, 1877; application filed November 1, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HENRY J. DAVIES and WALTER D. DAVIES both of the city ofBrooklyn, in the county 0 Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminated Clocks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention is more especially designed to be appliedto portable clocks havingtranslucent dials, for use either on mantel-pieces, tables, brackets, or other like stands, or for support against a wall by any suitable suspension attachment.

The invention consists in a combination of a translucent dial, a clock-movement, a lamp supporter or burner arranged between the dial and the movement, and a base or stand supporting the whole.

The invention likewise consists in a combination of a clock-movement, having an outer case constructed to form a reflector, a translucent dial, and a lamp supporter or burner, arranged between said reflector and said dial, whereby the case inclosing the movement is made to increase the illuminating effect of the clock.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section, in a plane at right angles to the face of the dial, of a clock constructed in accordance with our invention, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the same on the line a; as.

A is the translucent dial, which may be of any suitable construction. B is the frame of the clock-movement, arranged at a sufficient distance in rear of the dial to'receive between it and the dial a lamp-supporter, O, or a gasburner, 0 both of which, as well as the clock movement, by or through its frame or a case inclosing the latter, as also the dial of the clock, are collectively supported by one and the same base or stand D, of which the lampsupporter 0 may form a part. To give firmness and solidity to this multitudinous use of said base or stand, it not only has the dial secured to it below in front-as, for instance, by a screw, b-but it is constructed with an upward extension, 11, in rear of the lamp supporter or burner, and to which. the frame B of the clockmovement is secured. Said extension d also serves for the attachment of a case, E, inclosing the clock-movement, and provides for bracing or supporting the dial at or near its top by an elongated screw-bolt, e.

A bracket, Gr, straddling the case E at its top, is also secured to said extension d, and not only serves to clamp the front and back of the case together, but is formed with an eye, f, whereby the clock may be suspended by a nail against the wall.

When the clock is not thus suspended, however, the baseor stand D serves to carry it upon a table, mantel-piece, bracket, or other bottom support.

Both the lamp 0 and the gas-burner 0 may be removable, the former to provide for filling, trimming, cleaning, or renewal of the wick, and the latter as occasion may require.

The gears g h z k, constituting the dialwork, are arranged back of the lamp-supporter O and burner 0 or either; or, in other words, the lamp supporter or burner is arranged between the translucent dial and the dial-work, and in front of the clock-movement, thus avoiding that shadow on the dial which takes place in turret and other clocks when the light is back of the dial-work or in rear of the clock-movement.

The minute-hand Zof the clock is carried by an elongated spindle, m, running through and having its bearings within a surrounding elongated sleeve, n, which has the hour-hand '1' attached to it in front.

The clock-case E, inclosing the clock-movement, has its front constructed to form a reflector, 8, thus adding materially to the illuminating effect of the clock.

Iclaim- The base D, having an upward train-supporting extension, provided with a central opening for the passage of the minute and hour hand arbor and sleeve, and the lamp or gas burner supporting forward projection, having a vertical translucent dial secured to or near the front edge thereof, substantially as described.
