UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS M. WILDE, OF NORTH WALPOLE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
SANCTUARY-LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS M. WILDE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Walpole, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Sanctuary-Lamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in sanctuary lamps and has in view a motor-driven mechanism to trim the carbon from the lamp wick during the burning of the lamp, the said mechanism being inaudible in action and assembled compactly with the lamp proper.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 illustrates a sanctuary lamp as suspended from the ceiling and embodyingand 3, wherein are shown my improvements in detail, two disks or plates 5, 5, arranged one above the other in spaced relation and rigidly secured together by the thimble bolts 6, and a plate 7 arranged below and similarly secured to the plates above, constitute the frame of a clock mechanism. The plate 7 is confined to one side of the frame and carries a spring motor 8, the winding shaft of which projects below the frame and is provided with a gear 9 meshing with a pinion 10 arranged on the winding stem 11. The motor extends some distance above the bottom plate 5 of the frame, where it is provided with a relatively large driving gear 12 meshing with a much smaller gear 13 secured to a vertical shaft 1 1, the shaft projecting above the top plate 5 of the frame, where it has an attached gear 15. The shaft 11 is further provided with a gear 16 which drives an escapement mechanism through the train of gearing, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2. Passing centrally through the plates 5, 5 and rigid therewith is a wick tube 17, the same standing some distance above the top plate 5, where it is counterbored and internally threaded to receive the threaded boss on the lower end of a tubular burner 18, the external diameter of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 11, 1909.
Patented May 24, 1910.
Serial No. 517,191.
this shoulder and the top plate 5 is the hub portion of a gear 20 journaled on the wick tube and in mesh with the gear 15, the gear 20 having a vertical socket 21 projecting from its upper face. The socket 21' receives the shaft of a wick trimmer 22, the trimmer having an overhanging trimming finger 23 at its upper end and adjustably secured at difierent elevations in the socket by a setscrew 24.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a conventional type of mounting for the lamp, the same embodying a pendant or vessel 25 suitably suspended from the ceiling and having a fuel tank arranged above the same and feeding the wick tube through one of the tubular hangers 27. The burner trimmer at the top of the upper plate 5 is supported in the vessel to stand above the top thereof, and inclosed by a chimney 28. Below the top plate 5, the structure shown in Fig. 8 is inclosed by the upper portion of the vessel, the latter having an opening in the side, through which the stem 11 is accessible for winding the motor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of frame plates rigidly secured together in spaced relation, a motor carried by said plates, a vertical wick tube passing centrally through the frame plates and having a burner, a vertical shaft journaled in the frame plates and driven from the motor, having an attached gear arranged above the upper plate, an escapement, mechanism driven from. the vertical shaft, a gear ournaled on the wick tube and in mesh with the first mentioned gear, having a socket, and a wick trimmer vertically adjustable in said socket and having a trimming finger overhanging the burner.
2. The combination of frame plates rigidly secured together in spaced relation, a verticallyarranged wick tube passing through said plates and having a burner above the upper plate, a wick trimmer revoluble about the burner, and a clock mechanism carried by said plates and operatively connected to the wick trimmer.
3. The combination of an upper, lower and intermediate frame plate rigidly secured together in spaced relation, a wick tube passing centrally through the intermediate and upper plate and having a burner at the upper end portion thereof, a motor carried on the upper and lower plate and eX- tending above the intermediate plate, a winding mechanism for the motor, arranged below the lower plate, a wick trimmer revoluble about the burner, means for driving the wick trimmer from the motor, and an eseapement mechanism arranged between the upper and intermediate plates and driven from said means.
4. The combination of frame plates rigidly secured together in spaced relation, a wick tube passing vertically through said plates, a motor-actuated mechanism carried by the plates and having a driven member journaled on the wick tube, and a wick trimmer carried by said member.
5. The combination in a lamp, of a burner, a wick trimmer revoluble about the burner and normally engaging the wick, and a clock mechanism operatively connected to the wick trimmer to move the trimmer continuously over the wick.
6. The combination of a pendant, a lamp arranged within the pendant having a burner projecting thereabove, a wick trimmer revoluble about the burner, a motor operatively connected to the wick trimmer, and means to wind the motor from the outside of the pendant.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEVIS M. VILDE.
