SAMUEL J. HAYES, OF GRAND RIDGE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,541, dated December 25, 1877; application filed March 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. HAYES, of Grand Ridge, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Road-Scrapers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to furnish a machine for leveling the grades of country roads, which is adjustable in width, so as to enable the operator 'to take in those parts of the road which need scraping down or filling up, without reference to the other parts.
The machine is illustrated more in detail in the vertical View, Figure l, the plan view, Fig. 2, and the. detached piece, Figs. 3 and 4.
The frame is low and flat, consisting of the two cross-beams A and B, which are held together by the two braces G O, and also by the handle D.
The two scrapers E E have each two crossbars, f f, diagonally mortised into the timber g of the scraper, and these are wedged fast to the cross-beams A and B by means of the Wedges H H H and flat iron loops I I I.
Instead of the wedges H H H, set-screws may be used, if considered preferable. Plates of iron K K K are laid on top the cross-beams A and B, in order to allow of easier Working of the wedges H H H. The cross-bars f f f are mortised into the timbers g g of the scrapers, and also braced thereto by means of the braces l l.
The scraper-blades m m are made of steel,
and have at the lower part a bend, so as to set them oblique with the ground, at an angle of about forty-five degrees, which is for the purpose of engaging the scraper to run into the dirt with moderate pressure on the handle D. The tongue N is attached, in the ordinary way, by means of the staples O O.
The manner of working the machine is by the operator holding the handle D, so as to govern the course of the machine, and also, by bearing down, he can regulate the amount of dirt scraped.
It will be seen that through the obliquity of the scrapers the dirt scraped off on each side is transferred to the middle of the road, making the same higher in the middle, so as to allow the water to run off on each side.
When the amount of repair is considerable it will be found convenient to first open the scrapers to their full extent, and then make a second passage with the scrapers set closer together, which will give the road a good finish, and for which purpose my machine is more specially adapted.
I claim as my invention In a road-scraper, the combination of the scrapers E E, having bent blades m m, crossbars f f, and braces l l, with the cross-beams A B, braces G O, loops I I, wedges H H, and plates K K, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and specified.
SAMUEL J. HAYES.
