HENRY B. SMAWLEY, o r GREENSBURG, IN'DIANA. team n No. 63,952, dated April 16, 1867 IMPROVED DRAINING AND 'DITGHING 'PLOUGH.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY .CONGERN;
Be it known that I, HENRY B. SMAWLEY, of Greensburg, in the county of Decatur, and State of Indiana,
have invented a new and useful machine for ditching open ditches, called H. B. Smawley s Drain Plough and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of thisspeeification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section; and
Figures 3 and 4 represent the share and cutter.
Letter A, in fig. l, is the beam; 13 is the share; C and D are the cutters, which might be straight or curved;
E E are the checks of the channel through which the dirt passes; F and G represent flanges of the cutters, by
means of which I prevent the shares from being drawn down from the beam; H and J are guards to prevent the dirt from falling over on to the beam; I is a chute, conveying the dirt from the channel to the ground and preventing it from falling into the ditch again; K is the inclined plane forming the bottom of the inclined channel; 2' i i 2' represent rivets by means of which the cutters are fastened to the beam.
- Operation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation.
I construct a beam, A, substantially as shown on drawings, and apply'thereto the twocutters O and D onc of which is placed somewhat ahead of the other. They are both so attached to the beam that the upper parts project over the perpendicular line. I fasten these cutters to the beam by means of the rivets i i 2' z; and to prevent them from being drawn down from the beam, I provide them with the flanges G F, which I place over the beam. These cutters, which may be straight -or curved, areprovid'ed at the bottom or foot with a shoe, which is halved and fits into the notched part of the share, which part is halved too, so as to lap over the halved part; of the bottom of the share. I bevel my share, and make one-half shorter than the other,-making, as it were, two shares in one. To prevent too great a pressure upon the corner in front of-the cutter, which sets a little behind the other, I make my cutters thicker than the cheeks of the channel, and bevel them in front, as-
shown in fig. 4, thereby facilitating the passage of the dirt through the channel. I then fasten the inclined plane K to the share B and beam A, and put up my chute I, and also my guards H and J, to prevent the dirt from falling over on to the'beam. Then my drain plough is in operation, the share B cuts the soil, or rather ditch, forces the dirt up into the chute I and out. .It makes a smooth and straight ditch, being worked by means of a. Windlass, and is cheap.
'IVha t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is
The arrangement ofthe share 13, provided with two connected but distinct points, one in advance of the other, with the cutters G D, as constructed and connected to the beam, and the inclined plane K, provided with a backbone or brace on its under side. the several parts being used together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
