CIGARETTE MAKING MACHINE F iled June 1, 1953 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Dec. 11, 1934 I g UNITED STATES PATENT OF Walter Everett Mullins and Felix "Frederic Ruau, Deptford, London, England Application June 1, 1933,. Serial No. 673,889 In Great Britain June 10', 1 932 6 Claims. (Cl; 131- -39) This invention relates to cigarette making maered on to a distributor 5, in the present case ,ch-ines,l.and refers more particularly-to the toa carded roller, from which it is again removed baccci feeding apparatus of such machines. by a picker roller 6 and delivered to the filling -=-.It. has .foraitsobject to provide meanswhereby trough '7 of the cigarette machine.
" the escape of short tobacco from the tobacco A shield 8 is provided beneath the combing 5 mass, during, the feeding is prevented, with a roller 3, and concentric therewith, and. collects view to simplifyingthe construction of the maany short tobacco which falls from the combing chine and improving'the efiiciency thereof, for roller. Such short tobacco will collect, in the asis; Well known; it has been-,theicqmmonpracportion of the shield nearest tov the hopper, and

the combing element. As the roller 2 rotates each set of pins in turn Several ways of carrying the invention into commences to protrude from the surface of effect will be described with reference to the the roller as the portion of the roller at which 35 accompanying drawings, in which: the particular set is located enters the hopper Figure 1 is a section of a tobacco feeding apbeneath the tobacco; see Figures 4 and 5. The paratus with the invention applied thereto. pins 9, therefore, feed the tobacco round to- Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the feed roller wards the combing roller 3 and just as the shown in Figure 1. pins are approaching the surface of the said 40 Figure 3 is a section on the line A B. roller they are withdrawn into the interior of Figures 4 and 5 are diagrams illustrating the the roller owing to the change in shape of the working of the apparatus, and cam. 7
Figures 6 and 7 show modified forms of the Therefore, the surface of the roller 2 as it invention. passes the scraper formed on the edge of the 45 Referring to Figures 1 to 5 which show a well shield is quite even and no short tobacco can known type of tobacco feeding apparatus, the escape from the space between the rollers. As tobacco is placed in the hopper 1 and fed upshown, three sets of pins are provided on the wardly by a feed element consisting of a roller roller, but this number may be varied to suit 2 to a carded combing element in the form of requirements. 50 a roller 3 which carries it beneath a brushing I the modification shown in Figure 6, a ro 4 Which brushes back n Surplus tobacco smooth roller 18 is fitted to form the bottom of On the u fa o the combing T011611 the hopper, and the tobacco is fed by an oscil- The tobacco is picked from the surface of the lating sector, having carding on its surface.
combing roller 3 by a picker roller 4 and show- The pins on the carding slant towards the 55 combing roller 3 so that on the forward movement tobacco is fed to the comber and on the rearward movement the pins slip beneath the tobacco without disturbing it. A shield 8 is fitted as before.
Referring to Figure 7, the smooth roller is dispensed with and a plate 20 sloping towards the combing roller and forming a combination of the shields '8 may be used through which a reciprocating carded feeder plate 21 protrudes and feeds the tobacco as described in the case of Figure 6. In this case, the shield 8 is replaced by an extension of the plate 20 formed concentric with the surface of the combing roller.
It will be seen that by constructing the feeding devices according to this invention that the shorts are regularly carried away with the remainder of the tobacco as no opportunity is afforded for the shorts to separate from the remainder.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:- r
