The present improvements have to do with the provision of a reflect- 4 ing surface, such as a mirror, on one of the walls of the container within which the lipstick or other article is enclosed; and also with the provision of an actuating slide by which the lipstick or other article may be advanced and maintained in various positions of advance within a holder that' is accommodated within the container.

It is accordingly an object of my invention to incorporate a mirror in the construction oi the present lipstick container, and to do this in a manner which is protective to the mirror, which involves but a minimum of expense inits production and a minimum of space for its accomino dation, and which affords at the same time a better grip for the fingers when seizing the' container during the act of withdrawing the lipstick or other article therefrom. It is further an object to provide for the lipstick an actuating slide together with means by which it is locked in various positions of adjustment and with other means for releasing the slide automatically when the lipstick holder is advanced within the container with which it is associated. These and other objects are accomplished by my invention of which asuggestive embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing in the manner fol- 30 lowing:

The holder may be of conventional formy in that it comprises a square tube open at one end for slidingly receiving a cap D` ailxed to one end of the lipstick or other article. Fitted with in the cap and bearing against the end of the lipstick is a plate 10 spaced from the end of the cap to provide a narrow chamber wherein may be accommodated a leaf spring E having one end portion 11 vertically disposed and then bent around to provide a horizontal portion 12 which extends adjacent the upper wall of the cap and linally executing a return bend 13 to provide a return portion 14 which carries a neck 15 on which is a head 16 forming an actuating slide. Extending laterally from the neck is a shoulder 1'?, and upon the forward face of the head is a cam nose 18. The neck passes through a slot 19 extending for substantially the length of the lower wall of the tube and also in the corresponding wall of the cap. The slide may be used as an operating medium for adjusting the lipstick lengthwise of the tube to a desired position of exposure. Afxed to the cap at the end of the tube is a plate 20 having its opposite edges extended slightly beyond the cap.

The slot edge proximate to the shoulder 1'? is racked as by serrations 4or teeth 21, permitting the shoulder to engage therewith. The tension of the spring acts to push out the slide so that the shoulder is normally engaged with th rack, thereby locking the slide, and with it the lipstick, against longitudinal movement within the tube holder. It is only when the slide is depressed thatthe shoulder becomes disengaged so that adjustment of the lipstick to another position may be made.

The lipstick together with its holder is adapted to be received within the container case through the open end thereof. A slot 22 is extended from this open end for a slight distance so as to receive the neck of the slide.

When the slide is advanced within the case, the cam nose on the slide is brought into engagement with the end of the slot 22 (seeFig. 5), thereby depressing the slide with the result that the shoulder is thereupon disengaged from the rack; continued inward movement of the holder, which wouldotherwise be prevented, is accordingly made possible by this release which takes place automatically. The holder lits snugly, yet lslidingly, against two of the narrower opposite case walls. An appreciable space is left between the holder and the case top as viewed in the several figures of the drawing. So that the holder may remain positioned snugly yet slidingly against the bottom 23 of the case, a pair of bars 24 may be affixed to side walls of the case in overlying relation to the holder. These bars accordingly serve in conjunction with the bottom of the case as guides in the sliding movements of the holder.

The case top which is one of the wider walls is apertured so as to leave but a narrow frame 25 extending around the margins thereof. Received between this frame and the bars 24 is a plate 26 having a polished or mirrored surface. This plate occupies a sunken position with reference to the top of the case and, in cooperation with the frame, provides a top wall for the container.

When the holder is positioned within the case, as shown in Fig. 3, the plate 20 may abut the open end of the case, so as to serve as a closure therefor. The edges of this wall protrude somewhat beyond the top and bottom of the case as at 30 and 31 so as to provide a hold for the ngers when the lipstick is to be removed from the case. In this-operation, the mirrored surface of the case is protected from contact by the fingers due to the raised frame in surrounding relation thereto. In consequence, the fingers will ordinarily rest upon this frame or upon one side thereof when holding the case preparatory to removal of the lipstick therefrom.

It is possible, of course, that the mirror thus incorporated into the case may be constructed otherwise than as described. For example, as suggested in Fig. 5, the central portion of the top wall 35 of the case may be sunken/in relation to .the surrounding edges 36. In such a construction the surface of the sunken panel is polished or mirrored to provide the reflecting surface. In use, the ngers take hold of such a case without contacting the mirror, the same as has already been described.

I claim:

1. An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end, a cap slidably fitted within the holder in fast connection with an article therein, an actuating slide in 'connection with the cap, and means with which the slide is in resilient engagement for securing the cap and article in various positions of adjustment longitudinally of the holder, said actuating slide having means cooperating with the open end of said case for retracting the cap within the holder.

2. An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end and provided with a longitudinal slot having a rack therein, an actuating slide in resilient connection with an article which is slidably fitted within the holder, and means on the slide adapted normally to engage with the rack for securing the article in a fixed position of adjustment longitudinally of the holder, said slide having means cooperating with the open end of said case to releasethe same for retracting the slide within the holder.

3. An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end and provided with a longitudinal slot having a'n associated rack, an actuating slide, a resilient connection extending from the slide through the slot to an article which is slidingly fitted within the holder, means on the slide normally engaged being in the holder a longitudinal slot having an associated rack, an actuating Slide movable lengthwise of the slot and extending therein to join the resilient connection therewithin, and means on the slide normally engaging with the rack, whereby to lock the article in a selected position of adjustment relative to the holder, said slide having means cooperating with an end portion of said case to release the same for retracting the slide within the holder.

An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end having its walls inthe form of rectangular plane surfaces two of which are relatively wide of which one iscentrally apertured to define a frame one side of which serves as a finger hold, a panel mounted within the aperture in sunken relation to the frame, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through -its open end provided with protruding means adjacent the finger hold adapted to serve as a complementary finger hold when the article holder is pulled` to accomplish its endwise removal from I the case, and means within the case supportingll() the panel in place adjacentthe frame and engageable with the article holder at remote points to guide the latter in its sliding movements relative to the case.

6. A lipstick container comprising an elongated case open at one end having its walls in the form of rectangular plane surfaces two of which are relatively wide of which one is provided with a sunken panel surrounded by a raised margin adapted normally to protect the sunken panel from contact by the ngers when the case is manually held, and a lipstick holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end provided with means protruding beyond the raised margin of the panel and adjacent thereto to serve as a finger hold when the holder is pulled to accomplish its lendwise removal from the case.

An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end, an actuating slide in connection with an article which is slidably fitted within the holder, coacting means on the slide and holder for securing the article in a fixed position of adjustment 1ongitudinally of the holder, and other means on the slide adapted to engage with the case when 4the holder is advanced therein for releasing the slide whereby the article within the holder is free to move lengthwise therein.

8. An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end and having a slot extending lengthwise inwardly from its open end for a short distance, an article holder slidable into and out Ao1 the case through its open end and provided with an elongated slot extending lengthwise thereof in line with the short slot of the case, means slidably fitted within the holder in fast connection with one end of an article therein, an actuating slide in connection with said means and extending through the holder slot to lie in 150 1,9ss,o'ss 3 part exteriorly thereof and within the case slot through the open end of which it is free to enter or leave, the closed inner end of the case slot forming an abutment for the actuating slide such that it is moved lengthwise of the holder to a position adjacent one end thereof whenever the holder is slidk clear into the case.

9. An article container comprising an elongated case open at one end and having a slot extending lengthwise inwardly from its open end for a short distance, an article holder slidable into and out of the case through its open end, and provided with an elongated slot extending lengthwise thereof in line with the short slot of the case, an actuating slide extending through the holder slot to lie in part exteriorly thereof and within the case slot through the open end o f which it is free to enter, positive locking means with which the slide is in resilient engagement for securing the slide in a fixed position o f adjustment longitudinally of the holder, and means connecting the slide with an article that is movably iltte'd within the holder, said slide having means cooperating with the slotted end of the case to release the same from said locking means.
