Our invention relates to insulating media, such as are used in electrical apparatus, machines and the like, and to all kinds of products made with such insulating media.
We have discovered that polymerized acrylic acid or polymerization products of derivatives of acrylic acid or the homologues oi one of these substances, either alone or mixed together constitute a very good insulating medium both for electrical m purposes and where heat insulation is required. If desired, other substances used for insulating purposes, e. g. paper, mica, and the like, can be added.
Polymerized acrylic acid ester has proved to be 16' of special advantage for insulating purposes.
lle have also found that by a highly intimate mixture of the said polymerization products and polymerizable oils. or oil preparations, e. g. linoxin, insulating media eminently suitable for many 2 purposes can be obtained.
'I'he polymerization is eifected by well-known methods, as for instance with the aid of light, heat, organic superoxides, etc. We have found that these new insulating media have great advantages 25 when used in the manufacture of cables which are made by the well-known methods.
As compared with the well-known use of caoutchouc or similar substances in the manufacture of cables, cables made with the above men- 30 tioned polymerization products have a longer life,
as the insulating medium does not deteriorate (ci. 11s-zw through age and ishot subjected to any action of the substances contained therein.
Also, in the manufacture of other products in which an insulating material is used. the above said polymerization products have similar advanu' tages.
The newv insulating media can be combined in any well-known manner with other insulating agents now in use.
The accompanying drawing illustrates diagrammatically a cable comprising a conductor 1 of conventional type which is' coated with the insulating material 2 hereinbefore described.
We claim:
l. An insulated electrical 'conductor in which the insulating medium comprises a polymerised ester of` acrylic acid.
2. An insulated electrical conductor in which the insulating medium comprises polymerized acrylic acid.- 3. An insulated electrical conductor in which the insulating medium comprises a polymerized ester of acrylic acid mixed with linoxyn.
4. An insulated electrical conductor in which the insulating medium comprises the polymerized ethyl ester of acrylic acid.
` 5. An insulated electrical conductor in which the insulating medium comprises one of the group consisting of a polymerized acrylic acid and a polymerired ester of acrylic acid.
